A state Republican official with knowledge of the decision said Thursday that Long is expected to formally announce her candidacy soon. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because Long had not publicly announced a run.
Nassau County comptroller George Maragos has already announced his candidacy. New York Republicans will choose a candidate March 16.
Long was formerly counsel for the conservative advocacy group now known as the Judicial Crisis Network. In a letter to Republican leaders last week, obtained by the Times Union of Albany, Long said she is the “most effective advocate” to take on Gillibrand.
Long could not immediately be reached for comment.
