According to the New York Post (http://bit.ly/HyvC7y), 250 phone booths throughout the city will get the 32-inch smart screens with Internet connections.
The free touch-screen technology will display local neighborhood information in multiple languages. It will include lists of restaurants, store sales, traffic updates, landmark information and safety alerts.
Users also will be able to file complaints or request city information by pressing an on-screen 311 icon.
The city Department of Information Technology & Telecommunications says the goal of the pilot program is to see what the response will be.
City24x7 will install and maintain the screens. It says the screens are built to be cleaned with a jet hose.
Based on the picture, it seems to be an addition and not a replacement. If it was a replacement, i cant imagine how practical it would be in the wintertime when people start breaking out the gloves and snow shoes. Even rainy weather may pose a problem. Touch screens and wet fingers dont get along well.
is jet hose the new term for pressure washer?
Every ticket bloomy gives =1 man won’t have what to eat that day. Because its more than a days wage for a average new yorker. And the money will go to make expensive screens in the street.
Not bad, it will have traffic updates, so each time I will sit in traffic, I will quickly jump out of my car, with a touch of a screen I will have a full update!
I am genuinely surprised that there is still a perceived need for public telephones in an age when almost everybody carries a cell phone.
These touchscreens seem good for tourists or even us who go for a day to Manhattan. We can look up places to visit and the daily sales. It looks good.
Won’t last. This being New York, these computer screens will be vandalized by dark skinned people in no time.
