Peoria Roman Catholic Bishop Daniel Jenky said Sunday that Obama is following previous governments that “tried to force Christians to huddle and hide only within the confines of their churches.” He pointed to Hitler in Germany and Josef Stalin in the Soviet Union.

ADL Regional Director Lonnie Nasatir said Thursday that Jenky needs a history lesson on the “religious intolerance and anti-Semitism fostered in society” by Hitler and Stalin.

Diocesan Chancellor Patricia Gibson, however, says Jenky offered the comparisons to “prevent a repetition of historical attacks upon the Catholic Church and other religions.”

although im not a fan of obama, it is wrong and ludicrous to say something like that and it cheapens the real evil tragedies that occured

The ADL is wrong – an attack on any religion by government is an attack on all religion. If the ADL expects the Catholic Church to help when Judaism is attacked by governments, the ADL should be there when Catholicism is attacked by our government. Hitler didn’t start with death camps – it was step by step

Ridiculous. The ADL is a liberal Jewish oragnization and does much more harm than good. They always attack friends of the Jews over silly reasons.

Bishop Willamson in England denied the existence of gas chambers but was told to shut up by order of Rome

I am seeing a total disconnect between what the cleric said, how the ADL responded and the comments. The comment was comparing a perceived attack on the religious independence by Obama, with Hitlerite Germany’s policies of nationalizing the churches. I don’t see a reference to any comparison to the shoah or to Yidden as raised by the ADL and I certainly did not see inferences to the crusades/middle ages/post war Eastern Europe in either the initial statement or the ADL’s reply. (I have every confidence however that a fellow poster will correct my perception of the story)
