Jerusalem - Interior Ministeri: IDF Does Not Want Haredim In Its Ranks

Israeli Interior Minister Eli Yishai talks to the press. (AP file photo)Jerusalem - The IDF does not want haredim (ultra-Orthodox) in its ranks, Interior Minister and Shas head Eli Yishai said on Wednesday.

Therefore, he does not believe that the new national unity coalition will draw up legislation to draft significantly more haredim into the army. Shas is part of that coalition.

Under the coalition agreement signed on Tuesday, the “Tal Law” will be replaced with a Kadima-drafted, government-sponsored Basic Law, with changes suggested by the Likud, requiring all citizens to perform military or civilian service.

The two parties agreed to pass a law to ensure “equal and fair distribution of the burden of IDF service between the parts of Israel’s population” by July 31, the day the Tal Law will expire by order of the High Court of Justice.

Speaking to Army Radio, Yishai repeated a claim he has made several times recently, that there are thousands of haredim waiting to be drafted into the IDF, along with thousands of haredi reservists waiting to be called up. “The IDF does not want haredim,” he said.

The minister also said that motivation in the haredi community to join the army is increasing. “We see more and more haredi youth who want to join the army, in contrast to the secular community, where the phenomenon of draft-dodging is on the rise,” he said.

“Whoever does not learn Torah should join the army,” he said.

Yishai addressed the makeup of the new government coalition.

“Of course in elections [Kadima chairman Shaul] Mofaz would have lost a significant number of mandates,” he said. “It’s not a secret that had Kadima gone to elections it would have suffered a complete breakdown.”

Nonetheless, the Shas leader said that Israelis did not want early elections and instead wanted the main political parties to unite.

Yishai said that although the new 94- MK coalition has reinforced Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s political position, he does not feel that Shas, with 11 of those lawmakers, has lost its influence.

“Netanyahu will not give Kadima everything it wants, because he knows that in the coming elections Kadima will be gone and he will need Shas and UTJ [United Torah Judaism] again,” Yishai said.

Of course they dont wanr Haredim in the army. They want to draft the Haredim and have former Haredim in their army. The army is not to protect Israel, it is to brainwash Jews to transform them into Arabs. Before Herzl, Jews and Arabs lived in peace in Israel. If it were not for the racist zionist movement, there would be peace and Jew and Arab would live in peaceful coexistence as we did before the zionists invaded our Holy Eretz Yisrael.

It's crystal clear that if your 60000 layabouts joined the army then the burden will be spread more equally.
Mr. Yishai: if you say a lie enough times, more people will believe it, but you're still lying!

How do you know he's lying? His lips are moving. The IDF does want and need charedim. But even if they didn't, charedim are asked to perform national service (nursing homes, hospitals, special ed) IN THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES!!!!!! I can't wait for the day that the chareidi community makes a KIDDUSH haShem rather than a CHILUL haShem as they are presently.

I believe the issue as far as we Haredim are concerned is not so much if Haredim will or will not be drafted in the army. The issue is, why have we failed to make people realise that the Yeshivos are just as important for the survival of the Jewish people as a JEWISH people as the army. I am not denigrating the army, there is a need for body and soul for everything in this world and usually the function of the "body" is more obvious. However, not succeeding in showing the Jewish people at large including all of our brothers and sisters from all walks of life, religious or not, that the Yeshivos are fulfilling a crucial and noble role is our failure and needs to be addressed by us. This is a wake up call for all of us to look carefully at how we behave, how we lead our life and how we can and must improve.

It is true. It is a known fact that chareidim have been rejected from joining the army many times. At this point the army is already full and they don't need the charedim with their special needs. They'd rather keep

In your opinion, if zionism didn't exist, and arabs didn't have a good reason to hate us, which sect of gentiles would currently be attacking us? Or do you think we would be experiencing an unprecedented period in our history where nobody wanted to kill us?
I'm no fan of zionism, but you my friend, believe it or not, are a historical revisionist.

@Anonymous #3: You, my friend, are missing a great business opportunity. If you yearn for life pre-Herzl then design a time machine to transport yourself and all your anti-Zionist buddies backwards.

Just take in account that pre-Zionist EY was NOT such a good place to live: the country was rife with malaria (for which the "racist Zionists" helped to find a cure), the heat was intolerable (no "racist Zionist-made air conditioning units), the water was scarce (thank the "racist Zionist" Mekorot Water Company for locating and exploiting new water sources), there were no places of secular education to train doctors and engineers (the "racist Zionists" established those), there was no electricity, because the "racist Zionist" Palestine Electricity Corporation had not been set up.

I could go further, Anonymous #3, but I think that even you can understand my point.

A gut shabbes to you, even though it comes - to some degree, at least, by courtesy of "racist Zionist" basic comforts and utilities.

He may be correct in his assessment. However the chareidim themselves should want to be apart of klal yisroel and defend its people and we the othodox should show the non dati how to behave and ultimately teach them the correct path. If we do so, if we actually appear to the world as a light amongst nations they themselves will desire our presence.
As to the previous comments about the racist zionists, I am amazed that you can walk and breath at the same time. Tell me you could chew gum also......

Maybe it wasn't all rainbows and unicorns before 1948 either. Pogroms happened, killings r"l happened. Maybe it wasn't that obvious hatred as today but it wasn't the perfect peace either.

Your comment is so vile that it does not deserve a reply, but the concept of "shrike k'hoda'ah" forces me to respond.

To believe that halacha prohibits Jews from having sovereignty over Israel is fine. There are many Jews who have beliefs that are simply wrong. But to deny that the state of Israel is protecting Jews in Israel and throughout the world (by being a safe haven for them) is simply lying. This is unacceptable.

Fool! Are you aware of how the yishuv after the time of the mechaber came to an abrupt and tragic end? Read some history! There were only frum Jews living in E"Y. Our "friends" did want to coexist so they killed lots of us.

"Before Herzl, Jews and Arabs lived in peace in Israel. If it were not for the racist zionist movement"

1) There were barely any people living in Palestine back then (see what Mark Twain had to say about the desolation)
2) Just because you don't know about the persecutions done by Arabs does not mean that there were not any.
3) Te Koran is full of hatred towards Jews.

Anonymous you know very little about history. My father A'H had a book describing before WWI a massacre in Yemen again Jews. If you are right than all the those meshuluchum coming from EY and showing the amount bochurim they have in Mir, Poniewicz, Belz and Boyan are fake and so are you. The also are supported by the invaders the Zionist. You must be of those who sat with Iranians denying the gas chambers where my cousins and mother was murderer. You are a phony.

But, there are two paramount issues: 1) Many of these 60,000 are older than regular army age and I would opine that a large %age are NOT LEARNING 12-15 hours a day but having a relatively easy schedule including home for lunch/supper & EVERY yom tov, Shabbat etc. The holy soldiers are trained & worked day & night, often underfed, under clothed & supplied. 2) If we established a Yeshiva on an equal basis to a Gov't funded University on a very high lever, then we'd be on an equal footing to have student exemptions & at the same time insure that greater of the students would be learning for , not just smichah for marriage purposes but to become Poskim & Torah Scholars who can teach, write & impart Torah to the masses. Yes, there are hundreds of thousands of Draft Dodgers amongst the "least observant" but little is discussed about this. If we want to "win" the :PR battle, then Rabbanim must go on the attack, give a PSAK DIN, that their congregations can join the army (do community service), No DRAFT dodging for ANYONE EVEN "least observant" working out terms that would be mutually accepted. B"H, this topic is front and centre and hopefully will be laid to rest...Chaim.. Toronto

If the Ribbono Shel Olam did not want the zionists to "invade", they would never have beaten the arabs. It is ONLY with the HIS help that they did win. And because of them, our holy country is a place where 1000s of young men and women can go to yeshivas and seminaries. If you learn a little tanach, you will see that this is actually part of Hashem's plan before Moshiach. And dont forget the miracles of the 6 day war either.

Did you ever hear of Bogdan Chmielnicky yms"h?! In the years 1648-49 he killed 1/2 Million Jews, just for being Jews. (גזירת ת"ח ות"ט) in the Ukraine. I wonder if that was also the fault of the Zionists?! You and all the other shmagegees, who are intellectually dishonest, rhapsodize about the idyllic life we had living side by side with those wonderful arabs. And those rotten, racist, Zionists came along and spoiled it all. All those Thousands of Jews that were murdered and maimed in the most brutal way by those fine arab gentlemen. It's not their fault. It's time to wake up and discard all of that nonsense.
