Firefighters responded to the 89th floor of One World Trade Center on Saturday, June 2, 2012, to help construction workers put out a smoldering fire in some wooden decking. The fire was a small one and never progressed to the point where it posed a threat to life or property, but its location on the site of the Sept. 11 attacks made it anything but routine. The New York City Fire Department says it got the call for help at 7.15 am.

Workers at the unfinished tower extinguished most of the burning wood themselves, but firefighters were still on the scene wetting down the area an hour later.

Officials said that the blaze was under control by 8.19am.

Construction has been suspended as the Fire Department investigate what caused the fire.

The floor has been charred in the fire and smoke could be seen for miles across the city, said the Fire Department.

The skyscraper is already over 1,200 feet high, with a few hundred feet more to go until it reaches its full height.

The building, also known as the Freedom Tower, surpassed the Empire State Building as New York’s tallest skyscraper at the beginning of April.

Once it is completed in 2013 One World Trade Center will stand at an amazing 1368 feet.

President Barack Obama will visit the site of the Sept. 11 attacks on June 14, where he will be briefed on the progress of construction on One World Trade Center.
