Israeli infantry soldiers pray during a military training exercise in the Golan Heights, on 29 April 2010. EPA/ATEF SAFADIJerusalem – Vice Premier Shaul Mofaz said Monday that he would like to see 80 percent of haredi (ultra-Orthodox) youth enlist in the IDF or National Service.

Speaking at a Kadima faction meeting, Mofaz’s comments came as the Keshev Committee was working to replace the Tal Law, which has allowed the framework for haredi yeshiva students to indefinitely postpone IDF service.

The Keshev Committee is being chaired by Kadima MK Yohanan Plessner. It was tasked with composing a bill for equality in the burden by June 28. The Tal Law will cease to be valid on August 1 in accordance with a High Court of Justice ruling that it is unconstitutional.

The Gemara in Nedarim says that Avraham Avinu was punished to have his descendants go into galus in Egypt because he took talmidei chachamim away from their Torah learning to fight in the army during the war of the 4 and 5 kings. If Avraham Avinu was punished then what about these guys?

What about the arabs being drafted. They get benefits and attack Jews every day. You got to be an idiot to join an army that forces you to listen to women singing and evicts fellow Jews from their homes. They have one goal. To destroy Torah judaism.

Can anyone tell me what’s the problem with sheirut leumi? My understanding is that individuals in the charedi community can choose between sheirut leumi and actual army service?

” Vice Premier Shaul Mofaz said Monday that he would like to see 80 percent of haredi (ultra-Orthodox) youth enlist in the IDF or National Service.”

Probably 80 percent of the hared youth would like to see Shaul Mofaz retire.

Can someone explain to me why the vast majority of yeshiva bochurim cannot volunteer in the ambulance, hospitals, police or old age homes? Why should they not contribute their part towards society? I accept the IDF is mainly a treif environment but there are many other ways that they can contribute through sherut leumi.
You can’t tell me that their contribution is limmud torah as the vast majority of Israeli society does not accept that. Even in the times of the mishna there were only 10 batlanim (full time learners) in a city of 120. Where on earth has this notion that the only acceptable course for frum boys is to sit full-time in yeshiva for the whole of their lives?
