New York, NY – In a setback to traffic safety advocates, the State Legislature this week again failed to vote on a bill that would allow the Bloomberg administration to use so-called speed cameras at dangerous intersections to enforce the city’s 30-mile-per-hour speed limit.

Unhappy with Albany’s pace, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg suggested on Friday a different tack: public shaming of leadfooted drivers.
“We’ll put up their names and pictures someplace,” Mr. Bloomberg said on his Friday radio show. “Maybe we can shame them, and we should look at that, because if Albany is not going to let us do this stuff, we’ve got to save lives.”
“Only in the crazy world of Albany,” Mr. Bloomberg said, could an upstate lawmaker decide the city’s ability to use the camera technology as it sees fit.
This is hypocrisy at its worst. Had this law passed, the car would have been given a ticket, and the car’s owner would have been liable, regardless of who was driving. So Bloomberg would have posted a picture of a 2005 Chevy Impala? What a deterrent that would be.
The only reason why this POS of a mayor wanted this law passed was to harass drivers and subject them to highway robbery. Those who would have been given tickets would be those going 41 in a 30 on, for example, Queens Blvd. by the cemeteries where the speed limit is too low.
Let the cops enforce the law. A cop is considered an expert witness in a civil proceeding such as those involving traffic violations. A camera isn’t.
The only purpose of such a law would be to raise revenue for NYC and its beleaguered citizenry.
Bloomberg is the all time nanny state leader.
Bloomberg’s picture should be the first one on the SHAME LIST. Shame on you Bloomberg for your illegal third term!
What a phony! Bloomberg wants these cameras as cash cows, nothing more, nothing less.
Bloomberg iis an idiot and I say this with the highest regard. And why people think he would make a great President is beyond me. I would rather have Biden and Obama then king Bloomberg.
get this meshugana out of town ASAP
then they will put up names and pictures if you are caught with a large sugary drink.lol
This assumes the convicted are capable of shame. That’s not always true.
mr.bike man bloomberg. If a bike goes faster then speed limit will he also get a ticket. Help when is election, cant wait,
To #4 - I’m curious to know what you meant when you stated that “30mph, on Queens Blvd., near the cemetery, is too slow”? Does that mean that upon your own volition, you can decide what speed is safe, and what speed is unsafe, and hence, speed up anytime you feel the urge to do so? If all motorists followed your logic, there would be chaos and anarchy on our highways. The fact of the matter is that where speed cameras have been installed, speed decreases, and accidents as well as injuries decrease. My community has dozens of those cameras, and motorists are warned with a sign, that a speed camera is present. If some reckless fool thinks he can outsmart the camera, he is in for an unpleasant surprise, when his speeding ticket arrives in the mail!
The Mayor should know it won’t work. He’s got his picture everywhere, for doing all sorts of stupid things, yet doesn’t seem to ashamed of it…..
Expect more speed cameras inside and outside the country. The purpose of this kind of camera is for public safety, but many don’t think it is. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, is now also concentrating on speeders. The mayor proposed shaming lead-footed violators caught by the city’s speed cameras. Many critics, however, argue that New York speed cameras are more about revenue generation than they are about protecting public safety.
