“I wanted to come out to Forest Hills/Kew Gardens and say thank you and show my support to the community and let everyone know that there’s still a lot of work to be done to win in November and after that a lot more work to do on behalf of the district,” Meng, who won 50.8 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s primary, said at the 71st/Continental Avenue subway station.

After defeating Assemblyman Rory Lancman and City Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley in the primary, Meng is seeking to become the first Asian-American to represent New York in Congress, and the first woman to represent Queens since Geraldine Ferraro was elected in 1978.

The primary was marred by low voter turnout, with poll workers in Forest Hills saying that only roughly 400 people showed up to cast ballots. The low turnout was reflected on the streets, with most residents in Forest Hills saying that they either didn’t know there was an election on Tuesday or that they didn’t vote.

Despite the low voter totals, the Queens Democratic party is thrilled with the outcome of the election. Congressman Joe Crowley, the head of the party in the borough, told DNAinfo.com New York Wednesday night that voters chose Meng because of her “incredible command of the issues.”

“They saw an opportunity to send a beautiful message about Queens county,” Crowley said. “We recognize talent in all shapes, sizes colors and ethnicities.”

I never knew being Chinese was all it took to have a “incredible command of the issues.”
