Maj. Gen. Aviv Kochavi says the area next to the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights could become an arena for anti-Israel operations, just as militants have used Egypt’s Sinai desert to target southern Israel.
Militants have fired several rockets at Israel from Sinai. Last August, militants infiltrated from Sinai and killed eight Israelis.
The Israel-Syria border has been mostly quiet since 1974.
Kochavi says militants have been penetrating the border area because the Syrian army has moved forces out to battle rebels. He predicted that eventually, Syrian President Bashar Assad will be toppled.
He was quoted by a meeting participant who spoke on condition of anonymity because the session was closed.
I hope he is more “on the ball” than Eli Zeira was.
Why do people who go to closed meetings feel obligated to blab about the contents? why can’t they just honor the trust that has been (mis)placed in them?
