Brooklyn, NY – With his most formidable challengers effectively conceding, Frank R. Seddio, a friend and longtime colleague of the scandal-tarnished Brooklyn Democratic chairman Vito J. Lopez, was chosen Wednesday night by party leaders to succeed him.

Mr. Seddio, 65, a gregarious lawyer who is head of the legendary Thomas Jefferson Club in southern Brooklyn, has sought to distance himself from Mr. Lopez in recent weeks. But he has been a longtime beneficiary of the powerful Brooklyn Democratic machine, which supported him for state assemblyman and later as surrogate court judge, a position he soon left during an investigation into thousands of dollars of donations he made to Democratic leaders and organizations before taking office.
