New York – NYC Mayor: Giuliani Approved Marathon Right After 9/11

    17

New York City Marathon banners adorn an entrance to New York's Central Park, Friday, Nov. 2, 2012. The course for Sunday's New York City Marathon will be the same since there was little damage but getting to the finish line could still be an adventure for runners from outlying areas. Such is life in Sandy's aftermath — disrupted trains, planes, buses and ferries, flooded buildings, blocked roads and knocked out power. (AP Photo/Richard Drew)New York – Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the New York City Marathon will go on despite storm-related objections.

Bloomberg discussed the marathon Friday while giving a briefing on the storm.

He says New York has to show that “we are here and we are going to recover.” Bloomberg says the marathon will “give people something to cheer about” after a “dismal week.”

Bloomberg has come under fire for pressing ahead with the marathon in a city still reeling from Superstorm Sandy. Some New Yorkers say holding the 26.2-mile race would be insensitive and divert police and other important resources when many are still suffering.

Bloomberg says his predecessor, Rudy Giuliani (joo-lee-AH’-nee), made the right decision to let the marathon continue after the September 2001 terrorist attack.

At that time it was a moral boost, now it’s a distraction and just bad middos of a very arrogant person that has destroyed this city.

9/11 happened weeks before the Marathon. I heard a report that generators were being used at the Marathon. There are mass of people all over the tri-state that currently have no ellectricity that could use these generators. It’s totally inappropriate.

    There is a nafka mina.

The attack & its effects on 9/11 were somewhat confined. Less people were displaced as a result. There was more fear then, rather than actual rescue & rebuilding that needs to be done now.

Lets see now. In 2001 the marathon took place on Nov. 2. That is not right after Sept. 11. They Mayor thinks it is fitting to have the marathon less than a week after Sandy. New York will recover whether it has the marathon now or in a few weeks (or next year if it couldn’t be rescheduled). It is wrong to have the marathon this Sunday.

9/11 was a great tragedy however it main physical damage zone was contained to a part of lower Manhattan also the city needed a boast. Now people need food.

Here goes Bloomy again; as usual, he’s totally out of touch… (I guess he’s taking off to one of his Bermuda homes)

What a dumb comparison, after 9/11 it was a strong message indicating that terrorism won’t stop us! What’s the urgency now, when people are still devastated and siting in the darkness, waiting for food, gas, power, etc.

Bloomberg is an absolute Moron with a capital M. What he’s doing borders on being criminal. There are people who have no power, no heat, no water, no gas and need police to help keep order. He is using valuable resources including 3 huge generators, untold number of police and other resources for the marathon at a time when people are literally dying and are in dire need of assistance. The generators could help power hundreds of homes and this idiot has them parked in central park unused for days just to have it for the media tent for the marathon. In 2001 the marathon was 2 months after 9/11. At that time there were no resources needed to help people with their daily lives. It was all being used for cleanup and looking for bodies, rachmana litzlan. I would say good riddance to Mike but unfortunately, given the slate of democratc candidates running for mayor we’re “oif g’hakdeh tzoros” no matter who s our next mayor.

2 month after 9/11 vs less than a week after Sandy. How can you compare?

Gulianni respected metzitza bpeh and didn’t talk like this arrogant individual.
Follow your predecessor. In all ways not the convenient ones.

Further ,in case you need an explanation differentiating between the two then you ought to give up your position.

    A child can explain it.

9/11 was concentrated on lower Manhattan whereas Sandy hit the city as a whole It is like running a marathon in Hiroshima in August 1945. The lack of aid or FEMA participation or National Gaurd etc . . . News reports make the situation in NY sound like society is unravaling this makes Katrina look like hiccup. Where is the response? Shame on the Gov, Mayor and Predident

What a bad comparison. Giuliani was facing terrorists and had to diminish their moral boost they received by thinking they can paralyze us, by showing they can’t. We had to display fortitude and show that we couldn’t be derailed.

Whereas here, we are not staring down terror and playing psychological warfare. Such a nutty mayor to even attempt to draw parallels. I’m glad he is here and not in Bermuda sunbathing like he was by the snow storm. Buy one just has to see the way we are suffering to know his competence hasn’t improved.

Yes, that was the right decision for THAT situation.
Can you imagine them running the marathon on schedule had it been scheduled for, say, Sept 13? The marathon that year, as this year, was run on Nov 4th. 2 months after the attacks. How can you compare it to this situation?
