Washington – Obama: Americans Agree With My Approach On Deficit

    39

US President Barack Obama waves a pen he says he'll use to sign the bill that would end the fiscal cliff during a brief statement in the East Room of the White House in Washington DC USA, 09 November 2012. Economists warn that the fiscal cliff--7 trillion US dollars worth of spending cuts and tax hikes--could send the U.S. back into recession if it goes into effect at the start of 2013. EPA/JIM LO SCALZOWashington – President Barack Obama, laying down his marker for grueling “fiscal cliff” negotiations, said Friday he won’t accept any approach to federal deficit reduction that doesn’t ask the wealthy to pay more in taxes.

“This was a central question during the election,” Obama said in his first postelection comments on the economy. “The majority of Americans agree with my approach.”

The president, speaking in the White House East Room, said he wasn’t wedded to every detail of the plans he outlined during the election, adding, “I’m open to compromise.” But he offered no indication that he was willing to back down on his insistence that the wealthy pay more.

Republicans stood their ground. At the Capitol, Republican House Speaker John Boehner said he remains unwilling to raise tax rates on upper-income earners. But he left open the possibility of balancing spending cuts with new revenue that could be achieved by revising the tax code to lower rates and eliminate some tax breaks.

Obama said he had invited congressional leaders of both parties to the White House next week to start negotiations on averting the tax increases and automatic spending cuts due to hit in January. Both parties agree that those changes, the result of failed deficit-cut talks earlier this year, could send the economy back into recession.

The president avoided any mention of specific tax rates in his remarks, saying only that the wealthy should pay more. He also called on Congress to quickly pass an extension of tax cuts, first enacted by George W. Bush, for families making less than $250,000 a year.

Republicans, as they have throughout Obama’s first term, say raising tax rates on wealthier Americans is a non-starter. Boehner said such increases would hurt small businesses just as they are trying to recover from the severe last recession.

“I’m proposing that we avert the fiscal cliff together in a manner that ensures that 2013 is finally the year that our government comes to grips with the major problems that are facing us,” the speaker said. He said cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and food stamps, known as entitlement programs, have to be part of the equation.

Still, Boehner declined to provide specific proposals to avoid the fiscal cliff.

He did say that raising the debt limit, which the government will reach sometime in the spring, should be part of any negotiations. Pressed for details beyond that framework, he said he didn’t want to limit ideas to address the problem. He burden is on Obama, he said.

“This is an opportunity for the president to lead,” Boehner said. He repeated a version of that phrase four times during the 11 minutes he spoke. “This is his moment to engage the Congress and work toward a solution that can pass both chambers.”

This guy doesn’t has no clue of what the definition of fiscal is, and yet has the audacity to speak in the name of half a nation who definitely out oppose his approach, and the other half not knowing it themselves.

Way to go, President Obama! Elections have consequenes! It’s one thing to compromise…but it’s a whole other thing to allow ourselves to be pushed around by Boehner & his gang!

The public has spoken: it’s time for the extremely wealthy to pay more than what they’re being asked to pay! Not to mention, a vote was had & the majority of Americans didn’t want to give the rich another $5Trillion in tax cuts! No way!

We can’t afford it! Not to mention, an Independant study just showed that tax cuts don’t create jobs OR revenue, coming in! What sense does it make w\as broke as war are, to allow people like Mitt Romney to go on hiding his $ away I’ll places like Switzerland, the Cayman Islands or Berlin!

The man had some nerve asking to be President, when he HIDES $ away from the gov’t! I’m sure had President Obama been stashing away $ offshore, ya’ll would have had PLENTY to say about that!

You sure had lots to say about Barack’s religion! Accusing him of being a Muslim, etc! And yet, felt no shame in turning a blind eye towards the fact that Romney belongs to a cult! Believes that HaShem was once a man like Us & that he now lives on a planet called Kolob & that when he [Romney] dies, he’ll get to be a “god” of his own planet one day & to have “spirit wives”! LOL

You folks in the right-wing can be such hypocrites! It astounds me!

“The majority of Americans agree with my approach.”

No – only a little bit more then half voted for him, that’s not enough to screw the rest. Besides, not everyone voted for him voted for higher taxes. Some voted for him because he on e of theirs or because they like his approach to some other policy.

That’s why I hate republicans, the are all Bloomberg republicans. What difference does it make if raise the tax rate or eliminate a break, the bottom line is the same.

Here’s another fact that’s probably going to leave the right-wingers on here as “shocked & stunned” as they were when Romney lost, since they refuse to accept any facts that don’t agree w\their own, but, here goes…

A recent survey done showed that a total 2\3rd’s of the country believe the rich ought to be taxed more AND that their stupid loopholes, tax shelters & ability to HIDE $ from our gov’t, needs to GO.

67% of the people surveryed said so! And other polls & statistics show this as well! Now, are the Repiblicans & Independents voting this way, ALSO moochers, etc?! Or could it be, that this way makes for a FAIRER PLAYING FIELD?!

It’s unreal the arrogance of people! Your candidate loses BIG TIME, the Republican platform loses BIG TIME, and in some cases, the Obama Administration’s take on the economy wins over the Tea Party or Republican’s platforms, by 2\3rd’s of the public…

But does that encourage even ONE of you to maybe rethink some of your beliefs?! To maybe go out & search for the TRUTH, that people you listen to all the time (Hannity, Rush, Beck, O’Reiley, etc), obviously didn’t want you to learn?!

Cuz I got news for most of you: outside of the right-wing bubble, EVERYONE is making fun of Fox News, Karl Rove, Rush, Hannity… ALL ‘EM, for *purposefully* telling their listeners that Mitt Romney was going to “win in a landslide!”, even though there were SO many other polls & demographics that Romney wasn’t winning, to show the right-wing’s “spin” on things, was just FLAT OUT WRONG!

So all I’m saying is: LEARN SOMETHING FROM THIS folks, and seek out the facts about things! Your whole mindset could change, once your *knowledge* changes!
