New York – Confidential Police Information Found Among Confetti Used In Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

    2

Garbage and confetti lie on the ground after the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York November 22, 2012. REUTERS/Carlo Allegri New York – Parade-goers at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade were shocked to discover that what should have been multi-colored confetti dotting the parade route were actually partially-shredded police documents which contained arrest records, social security numbers, names and phone numbers of police detectives, and even a reference to Mitt Romney’s motorcade. Much of the shredded paper seems to have originated with the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD).

Ethan Finkelstein, an 18-year-old college freshman who first noticed the confidential information near Central Park West and West 65th Street told the New York Post (http://bit.ly/TXjYod), “A friend of a friend was standing in front of me, and she had a big piece of confetti on her coat. She saw it had something on it, and we read it said SSN, like Social Security number. We started picking all the confetti up, and it had all kinds of stuff – birth dates, addresses, account information. I don’t know where it came from. All of a sudden it was everywhere!”

Law enforcement officials have said they are planning a thorough investigation, but that it is “too early” to verify the authenticity of the documents.

One police source said the source of the confetti had to be from the NCPD headquarters. “They have stuff that’s supposed to be shredded and go to burn piles. It sounds like some of it ended up where it wasn’t supposed to be.”

Bits of the sensitive documents were still visible under sidewalk grates even as of yesterday afternoon, but there was no police presence posted at the scene.
