The mayor was appearing at City Hall Monday with 34 people whose own lives or the lives of their relatives have been affected by gun violence around the country. They’re sending videos to lawmakers telling their stories.

Bloomberg has long been an advocate for tougher national gun regulations. He has found himself at the forefront of a re-energized push for gun control since Friday’s massacre at a Connecticut elementary school.

He says the carnage “demands immediate national action.”

It would be interesting to see stats showing cities with strong gun laws and how much crime it has vs cities which allow guns and how much crime they have.

Also it would be nice to add to the stats the general mindset of the citizens of those cities, which ones feel safer – those who have guns or those who cannot own guns.

Do these people think there is something wrong with the gun laws? Seriously, do you think for a second Lanza obtained these weapons legally?!?! No one gets their hands on those kind of weapons like that. So essentially, tightening the laws won’t do the job.

Gun violence is a low as its every been, and it coincides with an increase in gun ownership. School violence has also been steadily shrinking since it’s peak in the 1990s.
Bloomberg and co. are merely trying to exploit tragedy and emotion to push their agenda. No further gun laws are needed in this country.

Matter over Mind asks, “Seriously, do you think for a second Lanza obtained these weapons legally?” His mother certainly did! All her guns were legally-purchased! If stricter gun laws would have kept guns out of her hands, they would have kept them out of Lanza’s hands.

Can anyone explain to me what is the legitimate use of an assault rifle, You can parrot Rush Limbaugh’s rhetoric, seriously don’t you think making it less available to thugs and crazies is a good thing?

More important than gun laws might be arming the school security guards.

Jews who fight the improvement of gun laws and restriction of gun access are like tyrants who seek only their own future and not the future of the common good.

I am a heimisha bp yid. I keep four rifles and six handguns in my closet; in a safe of course. My wife trusts me and my boys have gone to ranges with me. I also belong to the NRA and yes I daven with a minyan 3 times a day and have chabrusahs. I think every frum yid should have legal firearms. The liberals who oppose it, too bad on them.

The answer is RIGOROUS background checks, including full health assessments of applicants AND their families. Banning guns is wrong and ineffective, but tightening up permit criteria will help. People with mental illness in their family should not be allowed to own guns or take their insane relatives to shooting ranges. Mrs. Lanza wasn’t exactly in the best mental health either, stockpiling all that stuff because she expected the apocalypse. Her insane son knew just where to go to get all those weapons & bullets.

#18, how hard was it to get a permit? Unfortunately, unless you’re in law enforcement you can’t get a permit to carry in NYC. I also love to shoot & I will join the NRA, because I believe in the 2nd Amendment & I want to keep my family safe. Guns per se aren’t the problem, the nutcases who get hold of them are.

#1 ..All you have to do is look at Chi Town (Chicago). They have some of the TOUGHEST, if not the TOUGHEST gun laws in the country. Yet they are the murder CAPITAL of the U.S..
Only goes to show that as horrific as Sandy Hook is , it is not the guns that kill but the individual pulling the trigger.
When individuals are taught, and trained with the proper, and safe handling of weapons, they can and are safe to use.
Personally, I have been handling weapons since I was 10 years old, by my Father, Z”tl. Began shooting skeet, and clay pigeons, and then entered local competitions, for years.
Have had guns and continue to own them, having them under lock and key.
