The 88-year-old Inouye was the longest serving senator and was president pro tempore of the Senate, third in the line presidential succession.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced Inouye’s death on the Senate floor.

Inouye who was Asian played a big role in support of Soviet Jewry and in strengthening Israel-American friendships.

Earlier this year, Inouye told an auditorium full of high school students in Jerusalem that an Iranian attack on Israel would be tantamount to attacking the United States.

Sen.Inouye was indeed a mentch. In spite of him winning the Medal of Honor, for wiping out a Nazi machine gun nest, when he came back to the States after WW Two, and tried to get a haircut, he was refused service in a barbershop, because of his Japanese ancestry. In the early 1990’s, it was revealed that there were groups of Japanese-American soldiers, who served with Inouye in the 442nd Regimental Combat Brigade, who were instrumental in liberating a number of death and slave labor camps, adjacent to Dachau. As a result, the government of EY invited a number of those veterans to speak about their experiences. One of the Japanese-American veterans stated that the concentration camp inmates, did not believe they were American soldiers, until they showed them the stars and stripes on their uniforms. I wrote to Sen. Inouye about the above, and he told me that the liberation of Dachau was always discussed at their reunions.
