Israeli President Shimon Peres’ office said Monday that Obama will be recognized for his “unique and significant contribution to strengthening the State of Israel and the security of its citizens.”

Obama is scheduled to visit Israel in March — his first as president.

Obama has often had a tense relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the Jewish state’s West Bank settlement policies and the lack of peace process with the Palestinians.

But Peres and the committee behind the award noted Obama’s overall friendship and backing of the Iron Dome missile defense system.

Israel’s Presidential Medal of Distinction is comparable to the France’s “Legion of Honor” or the “Order of Canada.”

No, Sherree, the joke is that you and the other haters here who keep twisting Obama's record and ignoring all the positive things he's done -- the declaration during his Cairo speech (the one you all love to denigrate ) that the U.S. will stand with Israel forever; the increased military and intelligence ties; the defense of Israel during the Gaza flotilla and Goldstone Report controversies; the refusal to go along with the rest of the world in pushing at the UN for a unilateral Palestinian state; the backing of Israel's right to self-defense during the recent operation against Hamas in Gaza, etc. The fact that Obama opposes settlements and has a rocky relationship with Bibi is par for the course in U.S. -Israel relations, as all prior presidents opposed settlements and all prior presidents have had up-and-down relationships with Israeli prime ministers. But your hate for Obama blinds you to all of that, doesn't it?

One thing never changes: Every time someone makes a substantive case that Obama has not been the villain vis-a-vis Israel he's made out to be by the anti-Obama zombies, one or more of those anti-Obama zombies will respond with name calling or some mindless comment such as yours. You really can't argue on the merits, can you?

Ester, I've followed your many postings on VIN. I'm still waiting for one -- just one! -- response with any intellectual heft. You seem like a sweet girl, but you react purely out of emotion or preconceived ideas. Can you intelligently counter anything Eli said in his comment #5?

Th evidence for Obama's clear anti-Israel bias is not worth repeating yet again. Those who lap up Obama's, and the Democrats, spittle would not recognize an anti-Israel bias if Obama dropped a bomb on Tel-Aviv.

Incredible -- yet another Obama hater who just can't articulate a clear defense of his views. Enough of just repeating the mantra that Obama has an "anti-Israel bias." Please give some details, other than the tired old cliche that he opposes settlements and doesn't have a particularly close relationship with the current prime minister -- which, as others have pointed out, could also be said about every previous president. When it comes to supporting Israel in international forums and in terms of defense and intelligence aid and cooperation, Obama has been so far from "anti-Israel" that to call him that really betrays an appalling level of ignorance.

I must chime in and concur, I have found that the "hamoin oilam" (the followers who are not usually apt to rise above and view things objectively) have been so fox news/mikva/friends blabed that they never even gave Obama (yes a black man) a chance. I never voted for him because of his liberal agenda, however, to one who undestands what true Leadership means; this President is one for sure. (Not all leaders are loved, especially presidents in office, but history will show that this president was the most active and successfull presidents in hostory). The only thing that Obama is guilty of is not being more vocal that he supports Israel, thats it, and its a very smart strategy if he wants to have any influence in the Arab world whatsoever. His record, however, is clearly no less pro Israel than Pres Bush. He has hired so many Jews and a Frum Jew to boot. Not saying to vote for a liberal at all, I won't and didn't, however, let's stop being boorish, and showing off our unintelligence and (fox news/mikva/street education and start being somehwat objective.

Only one detail that matters:
Obama supports a 2 state solution, which is impossible, as every Palestina child who is taught to eradicate Israel will tell you.

So what, you think that somehow makes Obama anti-Israel? More than half the Israeli public supports a two-state solution, as does Bibi (at least he says he does). Every president going back three decades has been for a two-state solution.

Well Said, lets just hope that when his term finished in 4 years Mrs. Obama will run for 8 more years so Israel will be supported at least 12 more years IY"H
