Both victims were Central American immigrants living in Spring Valley. Neither driver in the crashes were charged.

There are no sidewalks on that stretch of Route 59.Many immigrants walk along that route because they don’t have cars and can’t always rely on public transportation, said Gail Golden, director of the Rockland Immigration Coalition.

The organization she leads would like to hold a meeting with immigrants to discuss issues of pedestrian safety, she said.

Ramapo police have made similar attempts to reach out to the town’s large Hasidic Jewish population, which has many members who lack cars and often walk. [journalnews]
