New York – As part of its “consolidation” plan aimed at cost-cutting, the United States Postal Service has announced that, beginning this fall, all local Brooklyn mail will be shipped to Manhattan for sorting before being returned for delivery.

The NEW YORK DAILY NEWS (http://nydn.us/149B9dW) is reporting that postal workers say the new procedure will likely double the amount of time it takes for inter-borough mail to be delivered.
In May of 2012, the USPS announced plans to save approximately $1.2B annually by merging as many as 48 mail processing centers.
Under current procedures, Brooklyn mail is sorted at a Forbell St. facility and then forwarded to local Brooklyn branches.
Under the new plan, mail will be trucked to the Morgan Processing center in Lower Manhattan, where it will be sorted, trucked back to Brooklyn, and then distributed to local branches for delivery.
Also being phased out will be a JFK processing plant, which the USPS says will save about $18M per year.
That Forbell Street facility is only a dozen or so years old and they’re eliminating it?
Great idea! Any way to save money out of the bloated USPS is good!
this cuts out how many jobs?
They used to lose our mail right here at Midwood. Now, our mail is guaranteed to be lost in Manhattan!! I have had my mail go to the Bronx, travel back to Manhattan and come back to Brooklyn a month later. It was too late to be of any use!! It had a time limit and was marked accordingly!! IN BIG LETTERS!!
sounds as efficient as the sanitation sweeper trucks
I don’t get it. The Forbell facility is equidistant to Manhattan from many Brooklyn zip codes. Why should it matter where it’s being trucked for sorting?
Now my tzedakka request will take twice as long to arrive- GREAT!
If they centralize the sorting process, will they be able to make sure that all those sorting mail are literate? It ain’t funny. But it has seemed for quite some time that the qualification to be employed by USPS was to be illiterate.
