The announcement Friday by the Multi-State Lottery Association means ticket sales have soared as the frenzy grows for a chance to win the big prize.
The latest jackpot number breaks the record for largest jump between drawings. A Powerball jackpot in November 2012, the jackpot jumped $260 million to reach the all-time Powerball jackpot record of $587.5 million.
The latest jackpot has climbed nearly $240 million since Wednesday’s drawing, which was an estimated $360 million.
The last jackpot was won on March 30, so it’s been growing for about six weeks.
The largest jackpot ever was a $656 million Mega Millions prize won in March 2012. The prize was split three ways with winners in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland.
The cash value is an estimated $376.9 million. The next drawing is scheduled for Saturday.
If this drawing jumped $240 million from $360 million to $600 million, then it has not yet broken the record for the largest jump of $260 million this past November. It is a record Powerball jackpot, but still needs to break $620 million for the largest jump.
If nobody wins this one the next one will be the first billion dollar lottery
