The bill (A.7678) was introduced by Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg (D-Nassau County) and calls for the date to be changed to Thursday, September 12th.

State law requires town board commissioners to convene an annual public budget hearing on the first Thursday following the first Tuesday in September, which coincidentally, falls on Rosh Hashanah.

Weisenberg said the scheduling conflict would deny a “large percentage” of the community the “opportunity” to attend and “voice” their opinions, as well as putting Jewish town employees in a “bad situation.”

Weisenberg said the meeting would return to its normal date in 2014.
