Jerusalem – Shas spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef awakened on Monday evening from major orthopedic surgery at Hadassah University Medical Center to repair damage do his spine, the hospital said.

The 93-year-old rabbi had been in much pain in recent weeks follow a fall in his home. The surgery was successful. He will be transferred out of an intensive care department to a regular department for supervision on Tuesday.
