Coney Island, NY – The iconic Coney Island amusement park has been evacuated after reports of a swaying 275-foot tall observation tower at W. 12th Street and Surf Avenue.

The New York Fire Department says a report that the Astrotower was unstable was called in around 4:20 Tuesday.
A spokeswoman for Luna Park says the amusement area was evacuated and closed at 5 p.m. as a precaution. The park normally closes at 11.
Officials from various city agencies, including OEM, police and buildings departments and the city’s office of emergency management, are investigating.
Astrotower, which was installed in 1964, has not been in use since 2010. It once offered visors 360-degree views of the Atlantic Ocean and Brooklyn. It sits across the street from the Coney Island Cyclone rollercoaster.
Winds were not a factor at only 5 to 10 mph.
It swayed 20 years ago already. What took so long to figure out there was an issue. It’s gotta come down. If it topples in the wrong direction, H’ yishmor….
