    NEW YORK POST
    GRANNY HORROR AS PET ATTACKS
BROOKLYN NIGHTMARE:An Emergency Service cop emerges with a tranquilizer gun yesterday from the building where a Doberman pinscher fatally mauled a baby.

January 4, 2008 — A “protective” family dog yesterday mauled an 8-month-old boy to death as his grandmother screamed in horror, unable to wrench the infant from the Doberman’s jaws in the family’s Brooklyn apartment.

Andrew Stein, the only child of Paula and Brian Stein, died at Kings County Hospital at 3:06 p.m., about an hour after the attack.

The baby was being watched by his grandmother, Ruth Stein, 62, who lives nearby, building super Leonardo Collado said.

“She told me she was screaming for help,” Collado said. “The dog had the baby on the floor [and] she couldn’t take the baby away from the dog.

“The dog had the baby on the floor, chewing on his head.”

The attack was apparently triggered by the baby touching the dog’s paw.

Neighbor Jesus Rivera, to whom Ruth Stein ran for help, bravely grabbed the bleeding infant from the dog’s grip, the super said.

Rivera then took the mortally wounded child to his own apartment, while his wife called 911.

When cops arrived, they tranquilized the 6-year-old choco late Doberman, named Maccabee.

“I saw the blood on the floor,” Collado said. “The baby was covered with a blanket.

“The dog was banging, scratching the door inside the apartment afterward.”

The dog was carried from the building at 71 Ocean Parkway in Kensington in a cage, and handed over to Animal Care and Control.

By last night, authorities had not determined if he would be destroyed.

Maccabee was described as anything but vicious.

“To me, it was protective of the baby,” said neighbor Francisco Soto, 24.

“When I see the husband and the baby, my dog and his got along. But when I saw the wife and the baby, [the dog] wouldn’t let my dog near them.”

The building has several dogs and small children, neighbors said.

One neighbor, Merrie Melman, said Paula Stein is a teacher at PS 230 and her husband, Brian, is an administrator at Staten Island University Hospital.

“He’s a nice dog, the family dog,” she said. “He wasn’t aggressive. It’s a terrible tragedy . . . You don’t see this dog and say ‘Oh, my God.’ It wasn’t aggressive. It was a gentle dog. I don’t know what could have happened.”

Neighborhood dog-walker Dahlia Ross called Maccabee “as friendly as can be.”

“I would always see the parents and baby,” she said. “I would pet him and kiss him and he was always hunky-dory.”

This brings tears to my eyes. I simply cannot shake this story from my mind. The poor, poor baby. My chest literally aches for that child. That child died well before his time unnecessarily.

I don’t trust this type of dog cause they can turn on you in an instant! Dobie’s, rotts and pits are all inclined to turn, no matter how docile they appear. It’s just their underlying nature!

Dobermans are very sensitive dogs and bond strongly to their family; they are incredibly easy to house train and just as easy to do basic and competitive training with. They are desperate to learn and would do anything to please you. Despite their reputation more and more people are using Dobermans as visiting dogs in hospitals and care homes purely because of their good nature and gentle approach to the elderly and young. They need a lot of exercise and a lot of feeding. They are incredibly intelligent dogs and if allowed will push their boundaries. A firm approach is needed when considering this breed. Overall I would recommend a Doberman to anybody who has ample amounts of time to spent training and loving this dog, who can give it the exercise required and the affection they crave.

Any basic book on Dobermans will tell you, as if you need to be told, they generally don’t mix well with small children and definitely not unsupervised. Generally speaking, they don’t have a good sense of their own strength, can be territorial, and can have jealously issues. Having said that, properly trained Dobermans often make good pets/companions for seniors because they tend to be extremely loyal, want to be near their owners, are relatively smart and willing in terms of learning and following obedience commands, and, if necessary, can be extremely protective.

Dogs and infants don’t mix. I can’t stand it when people say, oh but my dog is different, he’s so smart and loving, blah, blah, blah. I take my little girls to the park and people get angry when I tell them to leash their dogs. “He’s so loving,” they say. But how am I supposed to know that? Keep your pets away from my kids, and keep them away from infants.

It’s completely the parent’s fault that this child is dead.—–It’s time that parents were arrested and jailed for being unfit and grossly negligent.

Dobermans are considered one of the top 5 smartest dog breeds, and are very easily trained.

I’m one of those people who truly believes that any animal can be nasty from a pitbull to a pug if you raise it poorly without proper training and most importantly LOVE!

It’s important to know where the dog comes from. What it’s bloodline is, what the parents were like. If you take the responsiblity of getting a pet, you MUST take all the steps to ensure it has a good background. And then do the proper training!

Dobermans are a particularly bad tempered and notoriously vicious, and should never be kept.

Dobermans, along with Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, etc are notorious for being bred for one thing: aggression. This reminds me of the little baby who had its toes chewed off by a pit bull puppy last year. I’m so sad that the baby died but the truth is, everyone involved is responsible because it’s a known fact that babies and dogs should NOT be left alone together and should NOT be in the same room unless someone is holding onto the baby.

My husband and I are the owners of the sweetest 4 year old Doberman. She is the most loving animal, always giving us kisses and snuggling under any blanket you can find and even sharing our bed. We have raised her since she was 8 weeks old and she is truly a beloved part of our family, my mom even refers to her as her grandbaby. Please don’t judge one breed on the actions of a single pet, Dobermans are one of the most loyal and loving dogs I have ever had the pleasure of owning. That being said, I would NEVER leave a baby on the floor with my dog, or any other big dog walking around the house. I am not placing blame on anyone, but the dog should have been locked in a room or crate while the baby was on the floor. Animals are animals and do not understand how fragile babies are, the dog could have just as easily jumped on the baby to play causing internal injuries without any intention of harm. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family during this sad situation

Dogs are so unpredictable. Any dog can attack without any prompting in some instances thinking they are playing and not hurting in fact they are and then some dogs can just snap. But a dog, any dog, should never be left alone with a child no matter of the breed they are still animals. I have always had big dogs and now I have an American Bull dog who is very sweet with an excellent disposition but I would never leave him alone with our child or anybodys elses child. A dog is always looking to be leader of the pack and a baby or child cannot defend that. Unfortunately dog owners tend to let their guard down because of trust but they are still animals and as much as they part of the family they still can do the unpredictable. My heart goes out to the family of the baby.

PEOPLE watch your animals and watch your CHILDREN! Do NOT take love, pets, the general character/nature of a breed/animal, for granted. Sometimes, sometimes… things happen, maybe not so often but for any one person to lose their child’s life and the child to die in that manner, it is not worth it. Situations bring about these tragic events— Prevention is the best method.

I feel great sympathy for the Parents. I’m a true animal lover to the fullest, but people need to be responsible. It’s like leaving an unattended candle burning. Things do happen, unfortunately.

Dobbie’s will kill small children..this has been common knowledge sense I was a child 40 yrs ago. When you have a small child and a Dobbie in the same environment you can’t allow the Dobbie to have alone time with a child. Dobbie’s will turn on you as they age, due to something about their brain and the skull size. My prayers goes out to the Parents of the baby.

I’ve had a dog for as long as I can remember and in watching my daughter play with our beloved Coco I am always aware of the fact that Coco is still a dog. She is a part of our family but she is a dog and still needs to be watched when shes playing so make sure things do not get out of hand.

My heart breaks for the child’s parents. They have to live the rest of thier days knowing that their actions, no matter how unintentional, resulted in the death of their son. There are many people who trust their pets around infants, usually without incident. I will not pass judgement, or assume she was not present at the time of the attack. The parents are not to be blamed nor should the dog be blamed. This is a tragic accident that has killed an infant, caused untold grief to his parents and the possible death of a once beloved family pet. They are all suffering. Blaming thepoor parents won’t change a thing. I’m sure they’re already blaming themselves.I pray that both are trying to comfort each other in this tragic loss and not cast blame upon anyone, even the dog.

Dogs retain instincts of their wild ancestors in their genes. It ain’t smart to leave a dog around a infant.

No dog should be left hanging around a child who is laying on the floor. I had a wonderful dobbie and he was nice to kids and anyone who came into my house. I knew that even though my dog, who was spayed/neutered and nice to everyone that he shouldn’t be allowed to be left alone around a child. Some dogs just snap when there’s eye contact which happens a lot with kids because they’re right at the level of the dogs face.

Oh my God, I am so tired of people thinking dogs are hairy people!!! Who leaves an infant on the floor with a dog running around loose? Common sense!!! That poor baby, and that poor family. I don’t let my Golden Retreiver out when kids come over because he can scratch or hurt a child with his enthusiasm…let alone let a baby lie on the floor when he’s out!!!!!! Animals are wonderful – but they are animals! Such a sweet puppy – it treated a beautiful baby like a chew toy and you people are all worried about the dog! I wouldn’t leave a cat on the floor with a baby – wake up people!

I’m reminded of the dumb-a** dog owners who walk their unleashed dogs in the state park where I hike. The park has an explicit, no exceptions leash rule that they(dog owners) often ignore. If the dog approaches you the first thing out of these dog owners’ mouths is “he’s friendly, he’s friendly” Then if he bites, well it’s your fault. You must have done something to provoke him. Dogs, with their unpredictable instinctive behavior shouldn’t be kept around infants and toddlers.

That is a horrible event. My prayers go out to the family. I hate to say it but here again after a animal killed a poor defensless child people are still saying things in reference to the animal like he was a good and friendly dog – something to that effect – well people need understand the chain of order – animals should not be treated like humans and their true nature should never be forgot. We can never truly know what goes on in a animals mind – but we can be vigil and recognize that their true nature is wild. I was taught that one can train a beast (animal tiger for example) and it may “act” a certain way for a period of time but never forget the true nature/essence of the animal. I don’t care how trained a tiger/dog/animal is said to be – I accept that a animal is just that. People seem to treat animals like they are people. The poor animals are being fed human food and getting human ailments like arthritis, high blood etc. Folks take animals to day cares.

People should realize that dogs are animals and will revert to instinctive behaviour to protect territory or defeat a rival. dobermans pit bulls german Shepard etc are bred to be protective, aggresive, guards = vicious, how many times do we have to hear “oh he was such a sweet dog” after another mauling death before we wise up? with that said the problem is always with the owner who doesnt take precautions to prevent these horrible instances from happening…

This tragedy makes me sick to think that an innocent child is dead, However, as a mother my first instinct would have been to grab a knife from the kitchen and kill the dog if I could not get them off my child. I do love dogs, but when it comes to kids safety and well being, the animal will not win.

Poor baby…NEVER leave a kid unattended NO MATTER WHAT!!!! Animals are just that…ANIMALS!!!

They should have used a bullet instead of a tranquilizer dart on the dog.

This keeps happening (in the UK last week, in San Fco. last year) with breeds like pit bulls or dobermans and people should know better. Some dogs have a killer’s instinct and the parents are responsible for having that kind of dog around a kid. Most dogs would never do that.

An 8-month-old boy was attacked and killed by the family’s pet Doberman Pinscher in Brooklyn Thursday afternoon, police said.

The 3-year-old dog, a neutered male named Mackabee who had been a member of the Stein family since he was a puppy, set upon Andrew Stein after he touched the dog’s paw inside the family’s home on Ocean Parkway, in Kensington, the boy’s grandmother told police.

The grandmother, who was babysitting Andrew and was in the kitchen at the time, heard the child scream and ran to see what happened.

“The dog completely destroyed the baby’s head,” according to building superintendent Leonardo Collado.

The grandmother, Collado said, ran next door and enlisted the help of a neighbor, Jesus Rivera, who pulled the dog off Andrew, brought him back to his apartment and performed CPR on him while his wife, Annette, dialed 911.

But police said it appears the dog had crushed Andrew’s skull. Andrew was rushed to Kings County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 3:06 p.m. after doctors worked on him for about an hour.

At the time of the incident, the child’s parents – Paula, a teacher, and Brian, a hospital worker – were not home.

The dog was tranquilized by police and placed in the care of the Animal Care and Control Center. The city Department of Health is investigating the attack.

“The health department is evaluating the dog and the circumstances surrounding the incident and will make a recommendation about the animal’s future that best predicts the public’s safety,” a department statement said.

If the department determines the dog is dangerous, and the owner agrees, the animal will be euthanized. If the owner doesn’t agree, a law judge could decide the dog’s fate after a hearing. Other options include retraining, relocating the dog, or having the dog wear a muzzle, the department said.

Dobermans, experts say, can get overwhelmed by loud voices or by quick moves made by children.

Mackabee, some in the building said, appeared to be well-adjusted, while others said differently.

Collado said he never saw the dog exhibit any aggressive behavior.

“I was surprised,'” Collado said, “but I don’t trust those types of dogs.'”

What is sad is that a family lost a child and a dog that was like family to them. The dod snapped. people snap every day. It doesn’t matter how frum they were or if you think they should or should not have had a dog according to Jewish views. Who are we to judge them? Who are we to say what is or is not a family member?
Almost every time I read a comment about a tradgety people post crazy comments about torah, tzniut and other irrelevent topics to the news headline. This was a sad story and a painful thing for anyone to go through. PS-I know I have spelling errors. I am on a train!

I’m reading this from the UK & recently the same thing happened to a baby over here. Dog maulings, and even fatal ones, are more common than you’d think. Pitbulls, rotweilers etc are vicious killer dogs and should be illegal. For some insane reason, though, people still own them.

BD”E…what a horrible story. How terrible for the family.

Before you go around calling other people morons, you might want to make sure that you don’t look like a complete idiot youself. For example, why the question marks after the word “moron”? Are you asking Ruven whether he is a moron? Also, if you would learn how to read properly you would see that the VosIzNeia post refers to the child being bitten by “their” dog. Not the post doesn’t say who “their” is referring to, however, the most logical guess is that the post is referring to the child’s grandmother.
