Israel – IDF To Dismiss 3000 To 5000 Career Soldiers Due To Budget Cuts

Religious Israeli soldiers pray next to their APC (Armoured Personnel Carrier) at sun rise on a tank staging area in southern Israel along the border with the Gaza Strip, 19 November 2012. EPA/JIM HOLLANDERIsrael – The IDF intends to implement wide-reaching budget cuts over the coming five years that will save billions of shekels, according to a multi-year plan published on Wednesday.

The plan, which would need to be approved by the cabinet, includes firing 3,000 to 5,000 career soldiers, and downsizing and closing air force squadrons, armored and artillery units, and naval deployments.

The IDF, which referred to the cuts as unprecedented, believes they could save around NIS 7 billion over the five years.

The plan includes shifting the make-up of IDF divisions to make them more flexible, a move that will include reducing the number of operational air force squadrons.

The army says the changes will provide greater flexibility to maneuver divisions, while regional divisions (such as the Gaza, Galilee and Golan divisions) will be shifted around and go through operational changes. The regular army Division 36, largely deployed on the Golan, will become one of five multi-theater divisions.

The IDF will also shift a division to the Golan Heights, but a source in the military said the shift would not entail permanently stationing it on the Golan, rather that the division would work “organically” with the ability to deploy to the Heights if needed.

Last month, the IDF canceled all reserve operational duty for the remainder of the year due to a cut in the defense budget for 2013 and 2014.

The government decided in May, to cut the defense budget by NIS 3 billion in 2014, and by NIS 1.5b. this year, as part of a wider attempt to deal with a NIS 40b. deficit.

    And they need Chareidim?

Oh so that is the plan, Fire 5000 chayalim and replace them with 5000 charaidim!

This sounds ill conceived and dangereous. Obama thinking has come to Israel.

There’s a lot of emphasis on cyber warfare and other “special” units (that are not for discussion here) that allow such budget cuts to be planned without having Israel lose its edge over its enemies.
Then, of course, there’ll be the influx of Charedi draftees that’ll fill the gap. Imagine the scene in the picture above. Frum boys davening next to their APC and all of a sudden 2 Charedi soldiers appear shoving puskas and laminated letters in their faces. They collect a few shekel and then move on to the next APC.

But they need those Haredim desperately- bwahahahahaaaaaaaa

These cuts make great economic sense. They fire the long timers who get the top pay. They draft Haredi newbies who get the lowest pay. The enrollment at state subsidized institutions falls and the government saves even more money.

But would I want to endanger my family by trading hardened IDF veterans for yeshivah bochurim? NO

Getting rid of highly paid soldures for cheaper young is their idea I don’t know if its a great one when war is pretty much imminant weather with north south or iran. Enlisting charedim isn’t a contradiction to firing 5000 hughly paid soldiers.

Training chareidim costs a lot more than training other recruits so where is the savings. Secondly you can not get people who don’t want to fight to fight. And if you think that the bozo israeli government is going to get a hundred thousand chareidim to sing hatikvah you must be smoking some heavy weed. Their plan is to strip chareidim of financial aid as a way to disturb the chareidi existence. They won’t dare cut a dime from arab children but chareidi babies will suffer starvation. This is the wicked israeli chiloni government. And how could anyone trust them with the safety of their kids in an army run by atheistic politicians. In the 1973 yom kippur war the then prime minister golda meir and defense minister moshe Dayan allowed 500 soldiers to die on first day of yom kippur war to show world that we were attacked first. They had all the plans of the attack from their mossad spies in egypt and syria. Most of the boys were hesder frum yeshiva boys. How can you trust a government that cares only to adopt the secular ideals from the west ranging from tattoo shops to gay centers. Its amazing how creepy these secularists are. First let them draft the arabs and cut the hundred million dollars they give gaza for shooting rockets into israel. Sick and getting sicker. The ten per cent chareidim pose a threat to Israel but the twenty per cent arabs don’t. Go figure.

It’s the politicians who want to draft chareidim, not the Army.

A disproportionate percentage of those being fired are from the Rabbanut. The internal war is only just hotting up. Anyone who thinks there will be money to provide for the special needs of the haredi troops, as even the leftists have promised, is dreaming.

they have also cut 25 percent of the kashrus budget for the army. tell me how you can provide haredims food with an already questoinable kosher standard and an additional 25 percent reduction for kashrus concerns.

Oh so it’s an economic move to take the Haredim?
Highly doubtful, as they’ll cost a fortune to accommodate.

Plus it’s not what they’ve claimed. They claim they need them.
And hardly worth inflaming the whole country to save a few bucks

A waste for all your comments, the story speaks for itself.

By the way, don’t blame the Military, they kept on saying the whole time, “We don’t need them”, blame the Pols.

The reading comprehension of the average poster here is very poor. They are cutting 5000 CAREER soliders, this has nothing to do with the new pool of young recruits drafted each year. These draftees are NOT CAREER soldiers.
