Mainz, Germany – Ancient Jewish Gravestones Found Near Old Cemetery

Mainz, Germany – A number of Jewish gravestones were found next to an old Jewish cemetery during construction work for a new housing project.

Mainz, a city on the Rhine, was home to a famous Jewish community from the 10th century onward until the Holocaust. It was a vibrant center of Jewish heritage and scholarship for one thousand years and produced many giants of Jewish scholarship, the most famous being Rashi (1040-1105.)
These are the oldest stones ever found in the Rhineland region.
