Mainz, a city on the Rhine, was home to a famous Jewish community from the 10th century onward until the Holocaust. It was a vibrant center of Jewish heritage and scholarship for one thousand years and produced many giants of Jewish scholarship, the most famous being Rashi (1040-1105.)
These are the oldest stones ever found in the Rhineland region.
The decision regarding the continuation or cessation of construction will depend on whether the gravestones are determined to indicate the uncovering of a cemetery or not. [Jta]
