ARUTZ SHEVA 7 (http://bit.ly/18Y2K7r) reports that Rabbi Lazar, who at the request of Putin had committed to participate in a ceremony honoring the the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Prokhorovka in the Belgorod region of Russia, was assured that air-transport back home would leave him leave him plenty of time to make it home before Shabbat began.

However, after boarding his return flight, Lazar’s take-off was delayed due to Russian military planes still occupying all available airspace as part of the ceremony.

Ultimately, a diligent pilot landed Lazar back home in time, but with only ten minutes to spare, time enough only for Lazar to call his son and inform him of his delay.

Lazar subsequently set out on foot, making the 19 mile, 8 hr. trip in just enough time to have a snack and a nap before heading to Marina Roscha Synagogue to lead services.

Not really news, it is what we all expected such a man would do. Still, a nice story.

Do we have all the facts? Couldn’t he have been driven for the 10 minutes (5-10 miles with a police escort)? Or had food brought to him at the airport? (Personally, I’d rather spend Shabbos in the airport than walk 19 miles, I think)

There is a story of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach z’l walking 26 miles when he was late for a scholar in residence gig. Big cities have large techumim!

Aside from LGA are the other two airports within “techum shabbos” to walk to New York City?

Is the airport near the Marina Roscha Synagogue also within “techum shabbos”?

    Just curious.

One time I was running late leaving work and could not catch the bus I needed. I walked for about 4.5 miles and came home in time for dessert. 19 miles is impressive. True, we can say maybe he should have stayed in the airport, but then what would his shul have done. And true, maybe not the best idea to go to an event erev Shabbos afternoon. At the end of that day he made a good statement about the distance a frum yid should go for Shabbos.

This should be melitz yosher for hashem’s children. Look at us yiddelech, rabbi lazar walked 8 hours for k’vod shomayim. For this itself kumt unz shoin moshiach. Let’s pray for a speedy redemption , noch dem tisha be’ov !

Is walking 19 miles really in the spirit of shabbat, the day of rest? I understand that there are 39 melachot, but am lost on why everyone considers this so laudable. This is an honest question, so please attempt to answer the question rather than ridicule.

the day of rest means, rest from the weekly mundane earning parnossa kind of activities and of course rest from lthe 39 melochos etc. rest to be able to sanctify hashem . rest does not mean to nap, to sleep. on the contrary here is a day to spend connecting to Hashem because you have more time , no working at your office tody and this is what rabbi lazar did, he made a kiddush Hashem and in place of applauding him and taking the story as it is there ae those who are looking to discredit him, acting as persecuters, to find hiim guilty etc. It is healthier to say to Hashem, nu really can`t you see the ehrlichkeit of your children and bring moshiach already.
