Hein, 44, of New Paltz, died last week from a medical condition.
Police from across the state attended his funeral in Kingston, together with a large delegation from the Village of Kiryas Joel.

One who knew him well was Sullivan County Undersheriff Eric Chaboty, himself a retired state trooper, who went through the State Police Academy with Hein in 1987.
“He did a great job for the State Police in the Monroe Barracks in terms of handling the sometimes tumultuous situation in the Village of Kiryas Joel,” he said. “He was able to bring both factions together and find middle ground and always leave both sides satisfied.”

Capt. Stephen Nevins, his superior officer, said during the service that he’d always been impressed with Hein’s grasp of Hasidic customs and practices. Turns out, Hein’s favorite bedside reading was a well-thumbed edition of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Judaism,” Nevins said.

Hein is survived by his wife, Nina, and their four-year-old son.

In a phone conversation with VIN News, Special Assistant to the NY State Police Rabbi Rabbi Bernard Freilach said that the State deeply mourns the loss of the Sergeant, and NYS Police are searching for another individual as competent and as understanding of the special needs of the Jewish community, as the late Sergeant Warner Heim was.
