Washington – Zimmerman Will Not Get His Gun Back Immediately

FILE - George Zimmerman (R) is congratulated by his defense team, including Don West (L) and Lorna Truett (C) after being found not guilty, on the 25th day of his trial at the Seminole County Criminal Justice Center, in Sanford, Florida, 13 July 2013. EPAWashington – George Zimmerman, who was acquitted of murder by a Florida court last week, will not immediately get back the gun he used to shoot unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, because the U.S. Justice Department requested a hold on evidence from his trial, a law enforcement official said on Thursday.

The hold is standard procedure and does not reveal whether the Justice Department plans to pursue a new prosecution of Zimmerman, 29, said the official, who would speak only on condition of anonymity.

A jury in Sanford, Florida, found Zimmerman not guilty of second-degree murder on Saturday.

Expectations that Zimmerman would get his 9mm pistol back helped to fuel anger among those Americans who thought had profiled Martin and should be punished for the teenager’s death last year. Zimmerman’s lawyers said he acted in self-defense during neighborhood watch duty when Martin attacked him.

Federal prosecutors said they were pursuing an investigation into whether Zimmerman violated civil rights laws. Lawyers with expertise in civil rights have said they think new charges are unlikely.

I do not think that Freedom means getting a gun that slew a law abiding citizen back when you are on trial and aquitted. If you give this guy his gun back, wont that be very problematic psychologically at some level for the family of Trayvon? I think it is a moot issue as the gun lobby wants more blasphemy for its wall of prizes, but the poor Zimmerman fellow should declare that the gun should be destroyed and not take it back. It was guilty of manslaughter even if he was not.

They said on Fox news that the gun had already been returned to him, and again on CNN, Piers interviewed his brother Robert who confirmed the Keltec ‘s return, so am I to assume that they mis-spoke, or was the gun actually returned, and then there was a demand for its surrender (again) ?

I bet the gun could fetch a hefty price on the market. A collector’s item.
