New York, NY – Subway Opening Kosher Location in City

    23

New York, NY – While kosher-keeping Manhattanites have never been able to “have it their way” at Burger King, they¹ll soon be able to “eat fresh” at Subway with the introduction of the sandwich chain’s first glatt kosher location in the borough.

The shop, which is expected to open on Water Street later this month (though delays may push it off further into the first quarter of 2008), promises to feature the standard Subway atmosphere — with a Jewish twist.

“Our intention is for people to have the same Subway experience in a kosher location as they would in a non-kosher one,” said Tim Miller, an operations specialist for Subway Restaurants. “We wanted to appeal to a segment of the population that¹s never eaten at a branded fast food restaurant. They¹ve seen the commercials, but they haven’t been able to eat the food.” Subway’s regular menu has been tweaked in order to adhere to kosher laws that prohibit the mixing of milk and meat. Cheese will be banned from the premises. Additionally, pork products will be replaced with beef.

Subway already has seven kosher locations open across the country, including three in the New York area — one in Cedarhurst on Long Island, and two in Brooklyn. This year, the company plans to open an additional 11 kosher stores throughout the U.S.[ap]

Out of Towner. You crack me up!! first of all I am very happy that you teach your children that they should ask if something is kosher, but to have the Chutzpah to say “thats the problem with new yorkers” is very troubling to me. First of all my kids do ask me if what they eat is kosher. and yes I live in brooklyn. Second if you live out of town where hardly anything is kosher dont you think that anyone would do what your kid did? I mean it sounds really stupid of you to say that New yorkers have a problem!! why because there are more kosher stores here? I never said that I didnt know what was kosher or not I said I know of someone and that there might be some stupid people like you for instance that are from out of town that will not kinow the difference between a subway that is kosher here and may not realize that the subway from whichever hole you crawled out of is not . please explain what you meant??? and by the way .. I hope you have a good shabbos

Anon 7:52, for your information Nathans do make kosher hot dogs, you’ll see them at Shoprite in the kosher section at the back of the refrigerated aisle (across from the cholov yisroel milk). So maybe your friend was the one who was confused. (They’re not glatt, so a chossid still wouldn’t want to eat them, and definitely not a Sefardi, but a Litvak or a Modern should have no problem. The hechsher is very reliable.)

And I didn’t say a frum yid doesn’t need to look at every label.

My point is that frum yidden shouldn’t think that chinuch means teaching jewish children to keep chasing after every goyish idea and ‘kasher’ it and that life is not complete with out tasting all 57 variaties of Heinz beans.

Chinuch should also include raising children not to need every and enjoyment in which they see the goyim indulge themselves.

We would all be better off teaching our kids to accept the fact that we are here to stuff ourselves in ruchni’us, not in gashmi’us.

Chaval, today we see ‘heimesheh’ yiddin who can’t survive with just a Lexus, they need to buy cars from the Germans ym”s. Our need for more and more and more and more is very disturbing.

We preach the values of Reb Moshe, the Satmar Ruv, the Brisker Rov, the Chofetz Chaim, the VBilna Ga’on, the Ba’al Shem Toiv, but we live by the values of Donald Trump, Bill Gates, etc.

Can anyone imagine the Satmar Ruv running to taste the latest offerings at the ‘kosher’ Subway? Can you imagine the Vilna Ga’on insisting riding only in the best and most comfortable car? Can you imagine the Chofetz Chaim

For a child to see his frum parents excited about a chance to taste the goyish lifestyle in a kosher package with a ‘heimesheh hashgochah’ is mitamtaim es halaiv as much as feeding the child the real thing.

too stupid to read and look for the hechsher – that is the problem with NY. My kids even at the age of 2 know to ask if something they want is kosher. we were in NY at a local kosher grocery at the check out my not yet 2 year old daughter asked if she can have a candy she saw near the check out, her question was “mommy is this kosher, can i have it?” The people in line behind me were shooked that such a small child would ask such a question! CHINUCH people even in regards to kashrus!

the other one is on kngs hway next to 7-11. also to boruch.. maybe i went into the wrong restaurant??? I think that is the problem most people are taking about. I can tell you a story I know of personally. A friend of mine was walking down an aisle in shoprite of Ave I, and he saw thsi Chasidishe looking man with a long beard etc.. and he saw like 5 packages of Nathan’s Hotdogs in his cart!! He told him “you know they are not kosher” the guy who recently arrived from Israel told him WHAT? I went into Nathans (on kngs hway now closed) many many times of course they are kosher!!! In other words alot of people can make this mistake thiniing all subways, nathans, sbarros…etc.. etc…

Actually, the one on Avenue J is very good! And I’ve eaten in both types of Subway’s, and the Kosher Subway is just as good if not better than the non-Kosher.

It still amazes me how many comments there are when a Subway or a Sbarro or a Carvel that is kosher opens. It amazes me how many comments such as “must we be like goyim” are made. Goyim have been imitating Jews for centuries – have you checked the dress code for priests recently. When something gets done for the convenience of the Jewish olam, it amazes me how many complain like they were goyim.
By the way, a sandwich in Essex on Coney costs 13.99, in Subway 7.99, may you went into the wrong restaurant.

Why don’t they open one in mid-town. So many more frum people around 6th and 47-50. Just check out how packed the local Mincha minyanim are and there is not not to much in terms of cheap fleishigs there.
