New York, NY – In a land replete with chief rabbis and accomplished rabbinical leaders, there is a new illustrious personality charged with playing a vital role for Israel and observant Jews everywhere. He is Rabbi Yochanan Chayut, now the chief rabbi of El Al Israel Airlines. It’s somewhat well known that the national carrier of Israel has on occasion had some conflicts with the observant community that prefers to use the airline for travel to and from Israel, but hopefully all that is now in the past.

Rabbi Chayut has been associated with El Al for about ten years, but it is only in the last year that he has assumed his role as the airline’s chief rabbi. The appointment by El Al’s new owners, the Borowich family, comes in the aftermath of some friction with the religiously observant Jewish communities both here in the states and in Israel who enjoy patronizing El Al but require that it maintain its commitment to, at minimum, not flying any planes on Shabbos.

Intersting comment about davening on El Al.
On one trip I was seated in business class and the minyan for Shachris was held in the back of the plane (economy claSS).
One of the non frum passengers was very voacally complaining about the “datiim” disturbing his sleep.
I offered him my businesss class seat so that he would not be disturbed. He refused and continued complaining.
It was obviously not the noise but the davening that was disturbing him.
WHY DO WE STILL USE EL AL WHEN THE
SERVICE IS BAD
AND THEY HATE THE FRUM JEW
TRY CONTINENTAL AND SEE WHAT SERVICE MEANS
Why exactly does an airline have a Chief Rabbi? Is he the executive in charge of a whole division of ElAl rabbis?
