United Kingdom – Autism can severely restrict an individual’s ability to communicate with the outside world, and that poses a big problem when it comes to effectively educating someone with the disability. Incredibly, Josh Harris, a young man with autism from the Orthodox Jewish community in Salford, has overcome this blockage and has come as far as preparing to become a rabbi. Having been classified as what his mother describes as ‘mentally retarded’, he has learned the hard hard, and he is now enrolled at a Yeshiva, a Jewish school for advanced religious studies, in his community.

His parents are clearly behind him at every step they have helped to find him suitable schools, and his mother has even co-authored articles with him about autism. Josh says he couldn’t have managed without this support. “I have lots of pain and hunger which makes me lose focus. My mum and PAs help me by pushing me and making me change my focus.”
Josh’s mother Carol says the schools in Britain were not able to provide adequate support beyond a statement of special educational needs. “All the information and contacts were gleaned by us by researching and networking other parents. No professional source has ever been productive or positive. Many of our fellow Jews afflicted with autisum, can glean pride and hope from proof of what Josh Harris, a fellow sufferer, has accomplished.

It’s amazing the many Neuro-mechanical (a/o Neuro-motor) skills that Josh is acquiring in addition to the Social skills that he’s exposed to, with all the help and encouragement of his Professional Counsellors and his family. Hopefully, one day he will be capable of leading a Congregation.
Besiyata D’Shmaya. There is nothing
that stands in the way of willpower!
The article states “he has learned the hard hard” what does that mean?
Josh is truly amazing – I had the zechus to work with him for some time and I enjoyed every minute of it, I have watched him progress over the years, and the devotion of his parents (despite all their other family concerns) is truly to be wondered at. They have spared neither effort nor expense to give Josh the very best. Also, don’t forget his brother and sister who have lived with him and also helped him – one can’t do as much as this family has done if the children do not help full heartedly!!!
NEVER GIVE UP
AL TISYAESH JOSH!!!
