Michael Seifert, 83, a former Ukrainian who is now a Canadian citizen, has since the summer been fighting extradition to Italy, where he faces a life sentence.
As is its practice, Canada's top court did not provide a reason for dismissing Seifert's appeal.
Seifert, was convicted in absentia seven years ago in an Italian military court. He had been charged with being a former guard at a Nazi prison camp in Italy from 1944 to 1945.
Called the "Beast of Bolzano," he was accused of involvement in nine killings and abuses at the police transit camp that imprisoned Jews, Italian residence fighters and others. He also took prisoners to trains destined for Nazi death camps.
In his defence, Seifert has said he was only at the camp because he was serving a sentence there.
Bernie Farber, head_of the Canadian Jewish Congress, applauded the Supreme Court decision Thursday. [canada.com]
…Well, I guess it helps. I hope that all the young nazi “wannabes” see that eventually they will be punished.
