Burnett, who was Australasian Union of Jewish Students' (AUJS) vice-president last year, had just completed working as a leader on an AUJS Israel program and was visiting the popular Jordanian tourist town of Petra, some 125 miles south of Amman.
He died in a rockslide when a cliff path he was walking on collapsed beneath him while visiting the world famous ancient Nabataean archaeological site, Petra, in Jordan.
Forensic tests showed that David died after suffering multiple head injuries. His body has been taken to the government-run al-Bashir hospital in Amman for further examinations.
AUJS president Jessica Roth said, "He was an inspiration to everyone who knew him and he will be greatly missed," Roth said.
NSW Jewish Board of Deputies CEO Vic Alhadeff, said "Our deepest condolences go to his family, both at the sudden loss and at the tragic nature of his passing."
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said Burnett's family is receiving consular assistance. [ajn – VIN News]
