Police officers were dispatched to the home of the Helberg family on Kelm Woods Avenue, said Lt. Joseph Isnardi. When officers arrived, the baby, whose first name was not released, had already been taken to Kimball Medical Center by members of the Lakewood Hatzolah EMS squad.

The child was pronounced dead at the hospital a short while later.

"(Hatzolah) did a good job. They just couldn't bring her back," Isnardi said.

An examination performed by a member of the Ocean County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the cause of death to be accidental strangulation, Isnardi said.

Isnardi said members of the baby's family were home at the time of the incident, and the child was not left unattended.

"There doesn't appear to be any foul play. It was certainly accidental," he said, adding that the investigation was continuing. [APP]

What a tragedy. My heart goes out to the family, and I hope people will be very careful with these cords in future. Move the crib, tie the cords up or scotch tape them to a wall high out of reach etc.
