Israel – Men-Only Driving Lessons by Haredi Leadership

Israel – Haredi spiritual leadership, concerned that the Transportation Ministry's coed classrooms for teaching mandatory drivers' lessons might lead to lascivious behavior, opened their own alternative, men-only classrooms.

The Council for the Purity of the Camp, an organization representing a wide range of Hassidic courts and haredi Lithuanian Jewry, which receives spiritual guidance from Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv and leader of the Ger Hassidic sect, Rabbi Ya'acov Aryeh Alter, arranged for the men-only course to be opened in cooperation with the Transportation Ministry.

"Men were losing their drivers' licenses because they could not participate in mandatory driving theory courses," said Rabbi Yitzhak Ayneh, responsible for the new program.

"Women come to class dressed in next to nothing. It is a terrible stumbling block for many haredi men."

Ayneh said there was no need for a special women-only course since haredi women are not supposed to drive.

"in America it is accepted that haredi women drive. But in many communities here in the Holy Land, if a woman drives her husband is kicked out of the synagogue." [J-Post]

“in many communities here in the Holy Land, if a woman drives her husband is kicked out of the synagogue.”

Is this Israel — or Saudi Arabia?

What’s next — buquas, like the idiot Taliban Muslims impose on their women in Afghanistan?

I agree w/ chochom odif–everyone’s adopting chassidishe and eretz-yisroel minhagim. What’s w/ that? Misnagdim have no backbone, and the printing houses, newspapers, etc make it like that’s the only way to go. Most people don’t even know how many minhogim that they take for granted are really chassidishe in origin.

Given that, everyone should know–there’s always a different shul down the block, and another neighborhood up the highway. Forcing people to do nonsense only works if they feel they have no choice but to obey.

Even in America, in the strictest chassidish kehilos the women do not drive and none of the wives of the major old time rebbehs drove. I can’t imagine a sincerely chassidisheh pesron following a rebbehnwho’s wife drives. Litvish Roshai yeshiva have so far not had this mindset but I am sure that will change as they too move further towards copying the chassidim and all the other chumros that come out of Eretz Yisroel.

If you are a charaidi woman living in America you’d better enjoy your independence while you have it. A driving mother or sister will be a new litmus test for ‘good’ shidduchim within 20 years.

Hey Wolf, that’s why I said that not everything everyone does is perfect. We have to wait for Moshiach to come for that. All I’m saying is that we shouldn’t be so quick to judge.

If we can only get the woman to stop driving in Boro Park we would all be better off.

These people are just trying to be as Frum as possible. Do they get things wrong? Sure. Do we get things wrong? Sure. So why criticise?

    Real Shliach,

What is not frum about a woman driving that her husband is kicked out of the shul for it?

It’s time someone kicked the backside of the backwards leaders and let the women do something. Maybe, just maybe it will let them get out of poverty and not have to live off tzedakah and gemach loans.
