    Manhattan, NY – Nearly half the members of a commission studying ways to tame city traffic said the panel would likely recommend imposing fees for driving into the most congested part of Manhattan.

    The commission's choice will likely be a less ambitious version of Mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposal to charge cars $8 and trucks $21 to drive into Manhattan below 86th Street on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., The New York Times reported.

    Eight of the 17 Traffic Congestion Mitigation Commission members said they expected the group would emerge with a modified take of the plan. A leading possibility, making the cutoff for entry at 60th Street, and not charging drivers for trips within the fee zone.

    Sorry anonymous, but you have it backwards — residential permit parking will make sure that folks who don’t live in your neighborhood don’t use it as a park-and-ride. Further, if you actually studied London’s congestion pricing, you’d have known that there was no evidence of neighborhoods outside the zone becoming park-and-rides.

    Don’t compare London to NYC! We have 12 million people here on a daily basis and London has how many?

    Also there is proof that people will – and do come into other neighborhoods that do not have alternate side parking regulations.

    So you can imagine what WILL happen if Bloombergs ideas go into effect. This city will have more driving problems then ever before.

    People who go to Florida for vacation park their cars in certain parts of Brooklyn for months so they do not get ticketed for alternate side when they are out of town.

    There are four particular blocks in Flatbush that go so out of hand the last 7 years that the city just errected alternate side rules on two of the four blocks that were the worst.

    More than 50 cars got ticketed the first week and some finally got towed after being on the block for months.

    Unfortunately the ones who get punished are the people in the neighborhood who can’t park on their own block because the people who live in the two block “zone” that have alternate move to the other blocks and congest that block and area!

    There are also 5 people that I know personally who come from manhattan and leave their cars in this part of Brooklyn! The situation is crazy and this is without the official congestion pricing.

    We need some fix to the congestion problem but the way Blomberg is going about it is wrong and all this is about is TAXING people. This is just anohter form of tax.

    Call it what you want but if you studied the proposal it’s a form of TAX.

    In 5 years from now you will see what a disaster Bloomberg really was on certain issues.

    Of course, it seems that you view free parking as a basic right, which is very odd, not to mention selfish and short-sighted.

    Most people aren’t aware that permit only parking for residents in the neighborhoods closest to Manhattan are going to be instituted as part of this plan. This means that those who now drive and park near the subway stations closest to Manhattan will shift their parking to outlying neighborhoods. Residents of Crown Heights,Fltabush, Kensignton, and parts of Boro Park will see neighborhood parking diminished by this change. Contact your elected officials to voice your concern over resident parking permits for residents of some parts of Brooklyn.
