Monsey, NY – Last week, there was a front-page article in Journal News about fines levied by the county for unsanitary conditions left on Rockland County-owned property following a religious ritual, a ritual that involved chickens [Kaaporahs].

In the early days of Communism, the Soviet government was particularly aggressive in persecuting traditional beliefs. During that period, the Grand Rebbe of Lubavitch was arrested for teaching Torah. One of his guards, a man who was about to administer a beating to the Rebbe said, “Rabbi, I am going to teach you a lesson.” The unfazed Rebbe replied, “We will see who teaches whom a lesson.” Less than 100 years after the incident, secular Soviet Communism exists only in the history books, while the traditional Hasidic community grows exponentially.
Secularists claim to be tolerant, but in reality they constantly, unashamedly and publicly demonstrate intolerance of traditional Western religious beliefs, practices and societies. This intolerance is always hidden away in the pursuit of some other self-defined greater moral good.
Secular progressivism is alive and well in the cubicles and offices of The Journal News. To its credit, the newspaper has demonstrated a deeper understanding of the unique greater Monsey society that has emerged in the midst of its journalistic territory. Still, the editors and journalists should know that hidden behind the garb of their ancestors of the 1700s, is a progressive Hasidic community that constantly assesses changes to surrounding society; evaluating how best to adjust while not compromising traditional religious practice. It is Abzug-like arrogance for anyone outside of that community to try and teach them a lesson; and I don’t believe that the honest motive here is helping poor defenseless chickens. every month there are many health departmnt violations in rockland county. not one of them very makes the front page. that is what judah lerer is trying to say. the journal news tried to make a big issue out of something very small
Abzug-like–I love it. But the HATS, guys, no one remembers her HATS????
Sorry for the mis-spell . Was meant to read YATED.
jp 12:22PM Your point is well taken, (even though it wasn’t directed me). But please tell me what newspaper [of Record] is the YEDED. (unless it’s Arabic for YATED. Thank you. Where do you (personally) hail from, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, or THE (un-occupied) Territories???!!!. Thank You!
“Truth hurts? then dont read it.”
Truth hurts? Then don’t do the things that result in negative press!
Hey dunce kup. The Journal news is exactly what it is suppose to be doing. They investigate and report. Sorry if you dislike them . They are no different then the YID, Hamodia or Pinny from the Yeded. They are reporters of news. Truth hurts? then dont read it.
It is definitely wrong to leave the Kappuras area messy and make a ‘chillul Hashem’.
But can anyone try to explain to us all, what the Journal News has with this issue?
Why did they put their nose into this dirty stuff?
The fact that they make this “THEIR” issue, shows everyone (who doesn’t know yet) that they LOOK and SEARCH for ANYTHING they can come up with against the Orthodox Jew in Rockland.
They HATE us! PERIOD!
…And lets not forget, they get the information from the same “SELF hating Jews who… – well, I won’t go into it again now…
Bella Abzug was a coronary Jew (I am Jewish in my heart) that went on every waco cause that was against her religion, constituiency and mandate. The only reason that she was re-elected was that she brought the bucks to the ‘poor’ people in her district, who wanted to stay on the welfare rolls.
When she had her opinion, no one could argue with her – she, like my wife, was right all of the time.
Anon. 7:47PM To answer your question directly; [Bella] Abzug was a nice Jewish lady with a big mouth and a [very] loud voice, (who had a very tame husband), who purported to be some sort of a Union leader/organizer? in the early ’70s. I [along with you] fail to see the connection with the subject at hand, other than “name dropping”.
p.s.: She was also a Congresswoman.
(surely an outdated, politically incorrect term.
What does antisemitism have to do with leaving the place a wreck and health hazard to our own community. Go ahead. Shoot yourselves in the foot.
Ab·zug (āb’zŏŏg’, -zŭg’)
American politician who was a U.S. representative from New York State (1971-1976) and is noted for her support of the peace movement and feminism.
How does Rabbi Tennenbaum come in to this???
With all due respect, I don’t think the health department was being discriminatory. The organizers themselves admitted to poor oversight. The site was an unsightly, potential health problem. Let’s reserve the charge of anti-Semitism for true discriminatory and intimidating behavior. Such whining (along with leveraging the religious land act willy nilly) in the nation’s most tolerant region (180 mosdos and shuls are proof-positive of that) is wrong, ill-advised and, frankly, silly.
what a crock!
I think it is disgusting that anyone should condone sloppiness and bad behavior and claim that it is part of my religion. Other kehilos seem to do it right. Monsey seems to have great disrespect for Kashrus (re: Moshe Fink), Shatness (re: Yudel Shain), and now Shechita.
Am I condemning an entire neighborhood on the actions of a few? If there was more achdus among the Rabbonim (who should be setting an example) then yes! I am comdemning them.
“Abzug-like”??? What does that mean?
It is very dangerous to yell antisemitism at every perceived slight. It dilutes and inures people to real antisemitism
