'Oral declarations are simply not enough to ensure the security of this country,' said Leon Heyward, Head of Customs and Border Protection in New York. 'U.S. and Canadian citizens need to keep in mind the big picture, the real and ever-present threat of another terrorist attack on American soil.'

Travelers 19 years or older will have to show a government-issued photo id and a birth certificate if they don't have a passport.
Children will only need the birth certificate until new border rules become permanent in June of 2009.

Six senators from northern New England and New York asked the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on Monday to delay implementation of stiff new identification requirements for people entering the United States by land from Canada. [AP/WCBS]
