MONSEY — A 5-year-old child was struck by a school bus this morning, Ramapo police said.

The accident occurred at 9:24 a.m. near the intersection of Grove Street and Saddle River Road near a Monsey Fire Department firehouse, Sgt. Robert Lancia said.

The child was taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla by Chevra Hatzoloh Ambulance of Rockland County.

Lancia said at first the child’s injuries were reported as minor but the ambulance company later informed police the child was in critical condition.

He said the child apparently thought the bus was leaving.
