Marin County, CA, – A former finance director for a Kol Shofar synagogue was arrested yesterday on suspicion of embezzling more than $180,000 from the congregation, police said.
The director, who worked for the synagogue from 1999 through last May, was booked into Jail after investigators served a search warrant at his apartment.
Authorities launched an investigation in August, when synagogue employees discovered what they suspected was the unauthorized use of congregation funds. Police said the director, 63, is suspected of using Kol Shofar’s credit cards and bank information to obtain the money for himself.
He was booked into the county jail on suspicion of embezzlement, drug possession and bringing drugs or alcohol into a jail or prison.
