AFP PHOTO/BEHROUZ MEHRITehran – As much of a staple today as it was half a century ago, the Jewish-run Dr. Sapir Hospital and Charity Center in the heart of Tehran recently received a $400,000 donation from Iranian President Hassan Rouhani—surprising some, but not hospital director, Dr. Ciamak Morsadegh, who said, “We Jews are a part of Iran’s history.”

THE NEW YORK TIMES (http://bit.ly/1eNHov8) reports that Morsadegh, who has remained at the hospital even after his wife packed up and left for the U.S., said his allegiance to the institution is simple—because Iran is his “home.”

“I speak English, I pray in Hebrew, but I think in Persian. I am Iranian. Iranian-Jewish,” Morsadegh said, adding that he was not surprised in the least at the generous gift from Rouhani.

“What is important is that Mr. Rouhani makes big news out of supporting us. He is showing that we, as a religious minority, are part of this country, too.” Morsadegh said.

The hospital, which is located adjacent to the Imam Resa Seminary School on Mostafa Khomeini Street and has a patient base which averages about 96% Muslim, keeps the same “good atmosphere” it always has, according to managing director Khoddad Asnashahri, who is a Muslim.

“Here all people can come,” Asnashahri said. “No matter what religion, color, or race.”
