Number Of Deadly Fires Up This Year Over Last Year

    Deadly blazes across the city increased slightly this year after the number of fatal fires hit a near-record low in 2004.
    Eighty-nine people had died in blazes this year as of Monday, according to preliminary FDNY statistics.
    The top cause of fires was smoking in bed, followed by flawed electrical wiring, overloaded extension cords, candles, and arson.
