CBS New York (http://cbsloc.al/1hNWtfl) reports in April of 2013 during his mayoral race, Mayor Bill de Blasio said the rising costs related to water bills was “wrong” and had to stop.

Councilman Rory Lancman, a Democrat from Queens, is one person among many who remembers the mayor’s comments on rising water bills, and who wants him to work on the problem. Lancman said the water rate has gone up 78 percent since 2005, with an extra $155 million for “water rent” added to the cost of maintaining the water system.

Rosa Chung of Fresh Meadows said her monthly water bill has tripled in costs. The bill is so high that she’s catching rainwater in barrels to alleviate the financial hardship.

When asked if he would be able to reduce water rates, de Blasio said he’s “committed” do working on it over time, as with most of their financial challenges.

A seven-member water board appointed by the mayor will soon set new rates.

The mayor could not immediately comment on if rates would increase for residents, which has happened nine years in a row.

At least he is committed, unlike Bloomberg who just said it matter of fact that it will keep on rising and people just accepted it.
