Israel National News (http://bit.ly/O50Uc9) reports Sharon Brick, who leads the “Serving in Faith” program of the Aluma Association, stated 1,616 religious women enlisted in the IDF last year. The Aluma Association provides support and assistance to women in the IDF to help them adjust to military life.

Brick says the program does not try to push women to join the army, but is an informational group for high school women who show interest in military service. She says most religious women looking to join the army look for units that provide an atmosphere that supports the Torah lifestyle.

Brick also states that Aluma Association doesn’t encourage combat service for women, a hot topic when discussing women in the IDF.

Aluma representatives are usually not invited into the classroom, but Brick says some institutions have started to be more open with them.

The Chief Rabbinate maintained a ruling by the first Chief Rabbis of Israel that women are forbidden from serving in the draft due to Jewish law.

Women are ever so much more sensible than men. These women will learn trades that will get them good jobs for their futures and keep them from the overwhelming poverty seen in much of the chareidi community all the while being shomer mitzvohs.

Why would dati women pay any attention to halachic rulings by charedi Chief Rabbis? The charedim don’t think MEN should serve in the IDF!

This is actually a machloket among dati poskim and the preponderance of historic opinion is probably that women should not serve in the military. But because so many religious men won’t serve we can be thankful that there are so many women willing to serve.

Reminds me of a joke (in Arabic). So in the final crisis of the Gaddafi regime, the government paid loyalists in cash. At a Tripoli bank there are two lines, one for men the other for ladies.

An old grandmother sees the line for women is long and moving slowly, so she gets in the men’s line. A gentlemen tell her, “Grandmother, this line is for men only.”

The old lady replies, “Don’t worry, all the men are fighting (the government) in Benghazi.”
