Newsweek (http://bit.ly/SjY2ur) reports “Cursed Victory: A History of Israel and the Occupied Territories” by Ahron Bregman, will be released in the U.K next week and discusses secret calls and letters between world leaders and President Clinton.
The book claims that Israeli intelligence also listened in on a call between Syria’s foreign minister in New York and Assad in Damascus to discuss private conversations between Assad and American officials in 1999.
Bregman is a British-Israeli political scientist and author of various books regarding Israel and the Arabs. He refers to “unnamed sources” that provided him with transcripts of calls and confidential conversations between Clinton and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak in 1999.
The author also acquired a copy of a letter from Madeline Albright, Clinton’s Secretary of State, to Barak’s forerunner as prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. The letter, marked “SECRET,” promised Netanyahu that the U.S. would talk with Israel first before proposing peace offers to the Arabs.
Bregman, a former artillery officer in the IDF, would not discuss his sources or how the transcripts were authenticated, but told Newsweek via email, “ I think your assumption should be that if a reputable publisher such as Penguin decides to go along with that, then they probably checked the matter with me and approved.”
Bregman has lived in London since 1988 after he refused to serve in the West Bank and Gaza territories.
