Homeowners in the northeast Ohio city who don’t mow their grass now face stiffer penalties – including a possible 30-day jail term.
The council on Monday night unanimously passed the proposal, which makes a second high-grass violation a fourth-degree misdemeanor that carries a fine of up to $250 and up to 30 days in jail.
The law is to take effect in 30 days.
The proposal drew national attention, much of it negative, when it was unveiled last month. City officials have said the tougher penalties are meant to reduce city costs for mowing grass. The city cuts about 2,000 overgrown private lots a year.
what do you do during shmita?
I think that Canton Ohio doesn’t observe shmitta. This should be a law all over. My next door neighbor doesn’t live in the house. He bought it for investment. The grass is terribly long by mid-July and is a source of allergans to everybody on the block.
in scranton pa if your grass is bigger than 8 inchs you get a fine of $600.00
Why did the city cut it for them? I wish this city comes to cut it for us New Yorkers too. How about tree trimming and weeds? Great services.
I thought you don’t have any grass in New York!!
To Anon.11:49,
This should be the law all over? Are you nuts? Every selfish American wants to make sure they don’t have to look at an eyesore, I can understand this. It should be like a parking ticket, if you annoy someone else you pay a fine.
But these crazy fines and now possible jail time; if we don’t have jail time for someone going through a red light or blocking a hydrant
which puts peoples lives at risk, they should have it for this? Refuah Shleima- all you upside down people!!
I like long grass and wild flowers. In fact having long grass and wild flowers to me is a form of expression–nature over civilizaiton; a return to nature, etc. In short, it is about freedom of expression. First they’ll tell me to mow my lawn, then they’ll tell me I can’t leave my lights on on Shabbos. Hell no! Revolution!
new thats what i call democracy, freedom of choice= you have the freedom to choose to mow your loan or to choose to go to jail! Thats exactly what the forefathers meant in the bill of rights.
