New York City – Mayor Michael Bloomberg has won high marks for his no-nonsense, businessman’s approach to city government.

But he deserves no prize for the high-handed way he often acts at news conferences.

Our mayor doesn’t like to be pressed too hard on any issue. His attitude seems to be: “I got elected to this job. Trust me. I know what I’m doing. I have no patience for reporters who are just trying to trip me up or make themselves look good.”

Ed Koch was the quintessential New Yorker. He made us laugh even when even when the city was in trouble. He managed to juggle crisis after crisis.

David Dinkins, like Wagner, was modest and humble. He enjoyed being mayor and treated his constituents with consideration and warmth. Dinkins, unlike his successor, didn’t take pleasure in the trappings of office.

That successor, Rudy Giuliani, seemed to enjoy the power trip, including the bodyguards and the commissioners he commanded. He liked the job so much he even tried to change the rules of the game. The law required that he step down after his second term but, using 9/11 as an excuse, he tried to extend his term. Bloomberg balked at that and took over.

The other day, after the second crane collapse in three months killed two construction workers, Bloomberg got angry when it was suggested that the Department of Buildings had failed to ensure public safety.

“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the D.O.B.,” Bloomberg said. “D.O.B. didn’t crash; it was the crane that collapsed. Keep in mind that construction is a dangerous business and you will always have fatalities.”

Tell that to the loved ones of the men who died last week and the seven who died in March after another crane collapse.

Giuliani used to denounce reporters for asking stupid questions. This Mayor gets defensive and petulant when he doesn’t like a question. Neither posture is appropriate for the chief executive of a tough city that rightfully takes pride in its tradition of kindness and compassion.

I’ve covered nine mayors in my career and this one should get a prize for determination and tenacity. But he doesn’t deserve recognition for compassion, humility or humor.

Look at the way he is kissing up to Dinkins (probably the worst mayor in nyc history – remember the riots?) and Kotch, yet bashing Giuliani (the Mayor who transformed nyc into a great place to live and visit) and Bloomy. Just another liberal reporter looking to bash the good guys…

Being a mayor is not about scoring points with the media. Anyone who has two cents to rub together can’t possibly tell the media what they want to hear.

WNBC – Gabe Pressman is boliydicked!! Good for you. He doesn’t have to be nice to reporters that want to look good to get a name, by breaking a story, or blowing up a story that’s nothing. Bloomberg should be more sensitive to the people/victims, if he wants to be a politician, but the reporters deserve it.

Dinkens was a great guy a mediocre tennis player and a totally inept Mayor – “treated his constituents with consideration and warmth” Tell that to the victims of the 3 day pogrom R’L in crown heights & all the Street Crime victims. But all that matters to Gabe Pressman is that he was nice to reporters who asked stupid and inappropriate questions (unlike Bloomberg),

Dinkins was a bad mayor he couldn’t control the city.

Bloomberg IS the WORST mayor the city will ever have he is doing the most irreversible damage any mayor ever did before. By raising tickets, taxes, water bills, cigarette taxes etc. And don’t forget his master wish to charge people $8 for coming into manhattan.

Giuliani reversed this city from a physical and financial jungle without raising taxes and summonsing people all day long. He lowered taxes so people from new jersey or else would come and spend their money in NYC. NOT by charging people to come into the city.

He made it in a way so people come and spend their money gladly for fun stuff they enjoy.

The easiest thing to do is raise taxes and tickets etc. You gotta be creative to be mayor.

Gabe pressman hasn’t found a socialist democrat he doesn’t like – what a phony. Dinkins was inept a total incompetent. Koch in his last term was also arrogant and spiteful as well as less than competent – he was entertaining however. Guilianis heavy hand saved this city and Bloomberg penchant for total control and ever increasing taxation and government will sink this city. We are over taxed (many leaving nyc and state) with too many regulations – of too many types to count
