New Jersey – The board of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority voted this morning to stop accepting the quarter-size, brass and nickel tokens motorists have used to pay tolls on the Garden State Parkway since 1981.

Drivers will have to the end of the year to use up any tokens they have stashed away or to sell them back to the Authority.
“I do believe that most of the tokens that have not been used are stuck in the upholstery of old cars,” Executive Director Michael Lapolla told reporters after the vote.
Lapolla said the total value of outstanding tokens is less than $1 million. Each is worth 33.5 cents.
The Authority will set up at least three buy-back centers along the Parkway this fall for anyone who wants to turn their tokens in for cash.
The sale of tokens was halted on Jan. 1, 2002, as a way to encourage drivers to use E-ZPass.
