    Memorial to Jewish Community of ShanghaiShanghai, China – launched a Jewish refugee database today to record the history of Jewish refugees in Shanghai during World War II, Labor Daily reported today.

    The Israeli Consulate General and the government of Hongkou District, where most Jewish refugees lived during the period, jointly set up the project. Shanghai accepted about 30,000 Jews who escaped from Nazi-controlled Germany between 1933 and 1941. Shanghai acted as a shelter for about 25,000 Jews during World War II.

    Information including names, gender, hometowns and employment history of the refugees are open to the public and is available at the city’s memorial hall for Jewish refugees.

    The database now covers about 600 Jewish people while Chinese historians are seeking to add more people to the database.

    Most of the information is being retrieved from the city’s archives, information from Jewish communities and foreign governments via the Israeli Consulate General and responses to advertisements issued by Jewish communities. Some information is coming from the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences and foreign research institutions, said Chen Jian, the head of the Jewish memorial hall.

    The database is on the third floor of the Moses Synagogue on Changyang Road, Hongkou District.

    nice idea but vey painful..while the yidden in shangchai were getting money and food from the vaad hatzola and the jdc,,,,the vaad was ignoring the real problem of getting poshita yidden out of the csmps mark m appel (read zuroffs book on the vaad hatzola or should be renamed vaad hatzola for the elite rabbis)

    The vaad hatzolo even attempted a dialoge w/ eichman Zurrofs book was very inaccurate. David Kranzler ZTL is a much more authoritative source then the frie rov hating zuroff.

    documents now prove that in 1943 the american jews askes the vaad to march………………………the vaad replied you are the gravediggers of the jewish people and we do things our way the tora way wich means we save the rabbis first….kranzler sherer are gone the truth is comming out mark

    If you read the monthly journal Hapardes of 1943 to 1945, you’ll see that the vaad hatzolohs main interest was in getting the roshei yeshiva out of china to america. the other 25,000 were ignored until way after the war ended.

    I cannot comment knowledgeably about Zuroff vs Kranzler, but many seforim were published in Shanghai during the war with Vaad money. Not only a shas, but also many chassidishe seforim, such as Noam Elimelech. I wish this didn’t bother me…

    Mr.Zuroff is a frum jew and comes from amazing yichus. Where do you come off that he is not a frum jew?

    Not just that, Vaad hatzalah received funds for the bochurim in Shanghai but selected who should receive the funds and refused to relay the funds to the intended recipients because they had personal issues with them (?!)

    I’m gonna get flak, but I heard this first hand from people that were there. Some money was sent to Shangai marked “not for chabad” other money was sent for the “bnei hayeshivas” luxuries while others were starving. Reb Reuvain Z”L Pushed a gemora “printed in Shanghai” away from him with his elbow. Because he said “It was printed in blood”. The vaad was printing seferim while people were starving. When Reb Michael Ber asked Reb Aharon “Why didn’t you do more?” Reb Aharon tried to change the subject and wanted to speak in learning. Reb Michael Ber told him, I don’t know gemora I want to understand pshat in posuk. What does it mean “lo sa’amode al dom rayacha”?
