Greenpoint, NY – Hasidic Jews Kicked Out Of Yeshiva Playing Ball, Form Own League. AUDIO- VIDEO

    37

Greenpoint, NY – On sunny summer weekends, dozens of folks gather in Brooklyn’s McCarren Park to play a little ball. They’re part of the Greenpoint Neighborhood Softball League. Some have been coming since 1971, dressed in sweatpants and jerseys representing their team.

But in recent years, some players have been showing up in formal black loafers, dress pants and white button-down shirts. They’re called the Stormers, a team of young, mostly Hasidic Jews.

“that 2 3 hours that we play, we are the same guys as the latins or the spanish.”

    Whaaaat?!?

It’s one thing if you want to play ball, excersize, get fresh air etc. I believe it’s a great thing, especialy for someone who’s in Yeshiva or kollel, it gives you energy and broadens your mind to be able to learn much better.

But why do we have to be the same guy as them, let us play like yidden! in a yiddishen oifen! mit a yiddishen hanhugeh! and if we play as such, we won’t need to play like them, they will want to play like us!!!

the fellow was not saying that they are like them . he is speaking a broken english . i also thought like you did , but its obvios he has no clue how to speak . maybe after the baseball game he should apply for his GED and learn the language of the land so he can express himself properly.

Show emotion, but no hate — beautiful sentiment

Also a great perspective – no diving for the ball on concrete, and no embarassing anyone for a mistake in play.

Are they “the same” as those who professionally even would attack each other with bats? I think not, but better!

Lets just remember that this is only new to Williamsburg. In other Jewish Nabes this has long been an accepted and normal part of life.

Its healthy, its fun, and I can assure you that after the game they are rested and good-moody and are better husbands and fathers.

    Rock on and have fun

If you listen to the audio portion you will hear the announcer saying that the players “swear” on the field. I have attended several games where bochurim were playing, and I must tell you, that the swearing that goes on there is terrible and uncalled for. These guys have an opportunity to make a kiddush hashem everytime they go out on the field. Why not do it?

What a wonderful thing. Not only can we learn and daven, we can also run in the air, under hashem’s sun, smelling the trees and hearing the birds. This is much better than the musty beis midrash and certain a place that is full of ha’shem.

The Chinuch system in Williamsburg has brain-washed the youngster Chasid’s mind so strongly, that they think that playing ball is something bad or rebellious, that they sadely think the only way to do this, is to swear, take off the Kippah (which I have witnessed myself there) and be “just like” the hispanics or the latins, a Jew should be ashamed of being just like the gentiles, we are a chosen people and we lead more beautiful lives then do they (a matter of fact), so why align yourself with them?

Same goes with driving a bike or a motorcycle in Williamsburg, if its not “in style” (as they say in Yiddish: ס’ פאסט נישט then its automaticlly wrong and when you do, you have no other choice then to feel like a rebel.

Oh Williamsburg! if anyone of your leaders would have a little more foresight, just a little bit, perhaps your youngsters wouldn’t be so confused!

There is nothing wrong with baseball or playing baseball itself. But, we jews where always taught and this goes back when the jews where in egypt. not to interact with not of our kind. That’s the reason we dress different we talk different and walk and act different.

and i’m not saying that there’s something wrong with hispanic or latin. all i’m saying is that this is what we are and be proud and follow what you’ve been taught by your parents.

The person who is speaking on the video is trying to say that for the 2, 3 hours that they play the Latino and Hispanic players treat them as though they are the same as them; not in an anti-semetic manner. That’s why he continues that the non-Jews do not show hatred to the Jewish players, etc.
